Ruby Buying Guide, Caring for Rubies, Cleaning Tips
Thursday, July 3, 2008
Rubies display well in almost any type of cut, but avoid cuts that are shallow or poorly faceted. Many rubies that aren't suitable for faceting are still beautiful when cut in a cabochon or pillow shape. Do expect to pay for rubies of gem quality, though. After imperial jadeite, rubies are the most expensive gems in the world. Rubies are sturdy stones, but are still vulnerable to breakage and chipping. The same cautions should be applied to them as to any other precious gem. More information here Labels: Ruby

Ruby Jewellery Origins

During the middle ages it was believed that the Ruby could protect the wearer from drowning, relieve pain and cure rheumatism.A legendary Ruby, the size of a man's hand, said to be owned by the King of Siam in the 13th century was believed to prolong youth. Each night and morning the king rubbed the priceless Ruby over his face and neck. When he died at the age of 90 his complexion was said to be like a young man's, unblemished and unwrinkled. Ruby is the red variety of the corundum mineral, one of the hardest minerals on Earth which also includes Sapphire. Pure corundum is colourless. Slight traces of the colour creating elements such as chrome, iron, titanium or vanadium are responsible for the colour. These gemstones show an excellent hardness. Star Ruby - Facts, Cost, Pics & Famous Star Rubies
Tuesday, October 30, 2007
Star ruby is a rare variety of rubies. Nearly 3 stars are discovered in every 100 faceted corundum mined. Fine stars are more rare. The star effect or "asterism" is caused by the dense inclusions of tiny fibers of foreign particles in gems. The sharpness and the size of the star in ruby depend on the quality and quantity of rutile needles. We get a better star in ruby when the rutile packed more densely.
The most famous Star Ruby is over 138-carat Rosser Reeves Ruby, which can be seen at the Smithsonian. The cost of red Star Ruby can reach at $50,000 per carat. Read more from this article from Introduction of Ruby
