Exquisite Chocolate Pearl Rings

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Chocolate pearls are often described as exquisite and exotic pieces which are cultured to perfection. Most manufacturers source chocolate pearls from Tahiti and Hawaii, where some of the world’s largest cultivators of pearls can be found. These pearls are either sourced from fresh waters or the South Sea or saltwater. Hence, they are classified as freshwater or south sea.

Chocolate pearl rings, particularly have had its debut to the jewelry market recently. They are now one of the most favored types of item in gift shops and jewelry retail stores. More often, these items are considered part of the premium pearl collection. More than jewelry, they are considered fashionable but more valuable than accessories that are designed to match outfits and accentuate the user’s hand. More info

Pearl shapes

Friday, August 14, 2009

Pearl’s shape depends upon factors inside the shell of mollusk like; shape of nucleus or position of pearl within the shell and many more. The shape of the pearl determines its value. Perfectly round pearl is very rare. There are mainly three categories of pearl shape; spherical, Symmetrical and Baroque.

Spherical shapes are nearly round; this shape is most familiar, classic shape of pearl. Symmetrical pearls are regular shaped pearls, if pearl is divided into two parts they can be divided into two equal halves and Baroque shapes are irregular and abstract.

Some basic pearl shapes:

Round: When anyone thinks about the Pearls, round is only shape that comes into the mind. These pearls are very rare. Perfectly round and unblemished they look which are very rare and expensive. They range from perfectly round to oval in shape.

Near Round: These pearls are not round but oval. These pearls are slightly flattened or elongated. These pearls belong to Spherical category.

Oval: These pearls are “Oval” in shape and they are narrower at the ends than center. They belong to symmetrical category.

Drop: Drop pearls are pearls which looks like a pear or sometimes available in a teardrop shape. They are usually short and fat. They are usually used for making earring and pendants. They belong to same Symmetrical pearls category as “Oval” pearls.

Button: These pearls usually have flattened shape. They are suitable for stud type of earrings. Their flattened side can be easily attached to jewelry setting.

Baroque: Baroque pearls do not have any specific shape. Any irregular shaped pearl fall into this category. They are very cheap. They can have amazing luster and can look amazingly gorgeous. Most info here

Grading Pearls

Friday, July 3, 2009

Determine which scale that your pearls are being graded on: Pearls have two different quality scales: ‘AAA-A and A-D’. Freshwater pearls are the primary users of the AAA-A system. It can be used in other circumstances, but not often.

AAA-A Pearl Grades

Think Freshwater pearls when looking at the data below:

In the AAA-A system, AAA is for essentially flawless pearls, with high luster and no apparent defects. No more than 5% of the pearl’s surface can have a blemish.
The AA rating indicates high luster, and 75% blemish free.
The A rating is used for a low jewelry grade pearl with minimal surface luster, and greater than a quarter of its surface blemished.

Pearl A-D Ratings

The alternative rating system – the A-D scale – is used for pearls from the South Seas or Tahiti. So this focuses on cultured pearls:

‘A’ rating means that they’re the highest quality pearls, with high luster, and less than 10% of its surface has defects.
‘B’ rating is for pearls with high to medium luster, and up to 30% surface imperfections.
‘C’ rated pearls can have up to 60% surface defects.
‘D’ rated pearls are something of a catch-all term. They usually have more than 60% of their surface area, or have concealable deep surface imperfections.

Bridesmaid Pearl Jewelry

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Pearl jewelry makes up for that very special day. There are a number of beautiful options for the Bridesmaid Pearl Jewelry. This jewelry is not only affordable, but also gorgeous. The bridesmaid loves the freshwater and the Swarovski pearls largely, and it is available in any style and price range. A Bridesmaid Pearl Jewelry is considered an ideal jewelry for a wedding occasion, may it be a formal affair or a beach wedding or any other type.

It is a jewelry that will surely be appreciated. While shopping for the Bridesmaid Pearl Jewelry, always remember the style and location of the wedding. For example, if it is a beach marriage, then select pearl jewelry such that it will suit the calm and relaxed location. Here I would prefer jewelry handcrafted from the Keshi pearls or the coin pearls. The round coin pearls are unique and fun vibe, similarly like that of the Keshi pearls. Both are the height of fashion. Coin pearls and Keshi pearls are a best choice if you wish to present pearls to your bridesmaid, and are looking for something away from the classic and traditional strands.

June Birthstone – Pearl

Monday, June 1, 2009

June is the time for weddings, the perfect occasion to wear the creamy white June birthstone jewelry - a pearl necklace.

This precious jewelry is created in the ocean depths with a process as mystifying as it looks. Whenever a mussel, clam or an oyster gets irritated by an intruder, in the form of a parasite or a small fish, it produces a protective layering substance called the ‘nacre’. Over a long period of time, this layer of nacre develops into a shimmering lustrous pearl.

Pearls can be harvested from the oceans of the South Pacific Islands, the Persian Gulf and Japan.

People have been obsessed with pearls throughout the ages. They grind and use these gems as cosmetic components and as treatment for stomach ailments. They also use pearls to decorate temples, crowns and clothing. Pearls are even thought to have aphrodisiac effects.

The pearl symbolizes innocence and purity. It stands against the thoughts of materialism and greed as suggested in a story by John Steinbeck, in a book entitled ‘The Pearl.’ Every fair lady wearing simple white dresses with a pearl jewelry is a sight to behold, and is used most of the times, as a subject in paintings and photography. In modern times, the conventional practice of wearing pearls is mixed with the latest fashion creations, giving them an eclectic trend.

Mikimoto Pearl Necklace

Saturday, April 4, 2009

Pearl necklaces come in several lengths. From the shortest to the longest, they are: collar (10”-13”), choker (14”-16”), princess (18”-20”), matinee (20”-24”), opera (28”-34”) and rope (37” and longer). The length of the pearl necklace will depend on the woman’s age, body composition and neck size, although an 18 to 24-inch pearl necklace is a good length for anyone. Generally speaking, the longer the necklace, the more it ‘elongates’ the neck.

The mark of “M”

Every jewelry created by Mikimoto including pearl necklaces, has an “M” stamped on its setting. This is a guarantee of quality. However, in some cases, the mark of “M” will only guarantee that the setting is genuine and not the pearls, which can be replaced and restrung.

A caveat: there is a black market for Mikimoto clasps, where original Mikimoto clasps are used for cheaper or imitation-quality pearls. Beware also of ‘closeout’ Mikimoto sales, even if they come in ‘new’ 18k gold.

The best way to distinguish a true high-quality Mikimoto pearl from other pearls is to look for a unique road map or line pattern on the surface of the pearls under a 10x magnifying lens. Experienced jewelers can recognize this. On your own, you will want to find genuine Mikimoto pearls to compare with your intended purchase. Once you see the difference, true Mikimoto pearls are easily recognizable.

You might also encounter pearl necklaces that are labeled ‘Mikimoto quality’. This is misleading. These are not pearls produced under the patented Mikimoto process. True Mikimoto pearl necklaces are those produced under stringent conditions in Ise in Honshu, Japan.

Akoya vs. Mikimoto

Another fine quality pearl is akoya pearls, although this is a general term used to refer to saltwater pearls. These are not Mikimoto pearls and they don’t cost the same.

Grading method

Mikimoto pearls are rated using four grades, with AAA being the highest. There are 4 sub-grades starting with AAA1. Highest-grade pearls are those with the best luster and reflective quality, almost mirror-like, while lower-grade pearls are those with reasonably clear reflection.

When buying your Mikimoto pearl necklace, be sure to ask for grading certificates. This is not only good for insurance, but it is also a guarantee that what you are paying for is a true Mikimoto pearl necklace.

Pearl Jewelry Gives You Unique Pearl Choices

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

The good news is that you can find modern, trendy pearl jewelry, if you know where to look. The key to getting pearls that are beautiful and unique is to find a skilled pearl jewelry designer. Working with pearls requires special technique, so locating a good, dedicated pearl designer will help you find the pearls that look great and offer a chance from the ordinary jewelry design.

The first thing you have to decide is just how unique and trendy you want your piece of pearl jewelry to be. If you want something truly original and one of a kind, for instance diamond ring that is accented with small channel set pearls for christian engagement rings, then you will need to find a custom pearl jewelry designer. If you want something that is just a little different, but that is ready to hand to you when you walk into a shop, then a custom designer is not required. Whichever route you decide to go, however, it is crucial to know some basics about pearls before you go, so that you can spot quality pearls easily and concentrate on finding a good design instead of hoping you are getting good pearls.

Pearls are graded on a number of factors, including smoothness, color, size and overall luster. The smoothest, whitest pearls are the ones that generally make the top grade, but luster is a factor that should not be overlooked. Luster is the iridescent quality that the best pearls have.

Pearls that lack this sheen and seem flat and lifeless are not good quality pearls. Shine does not improve over time, so don’t choose a larger, flat pearl over a small, iridescent one thinking that you can “shine it up.” Size is less a factor in determining the quality of a pearl than its luster.

With the best pearls chosen, you can focus on creating your dream pearl design. The cost of the process will depend on the quality of pearls you have chosen to use plus the cost of the rest of materials used in your setting. This means you have enormous control over both the price and the design of your unique pearl jewelry.

Cleaning Turquoise

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Every now and then you really should wash and cleanse your turquoise and doing that you really just want to use a lukewarm water with no detergent, not even a mild soap. You don't want to use any sort of jewelry cleaner. So you're not going to submerge your turquoise, but you're going to take a small baby's toothbrush, dip that into warm water and then scrub over the turquoise. Turquoise is very porous so you want to make sure after you thoroughly cleanse it that you wipe it down with a soft cloth and then lay it out to dry at least 24 hours. Most turquoise jewelry is also strung or set with sterling silver, and you want to make sure that when you are cleaning off the silver that you're not getting the silver cleaner on the turquoise itself.

Wear Turquoise Carefully

Turquoise is very similar to pearls in the sense that it is easily scratched and should be kept away from other gem stones and metals. When you are putting your turquoise away, you should definitely keep it separated in a small pouch on its own. You should put on all your cosmetics and perfumes before putting on the turquoise jewelry. The chemicals in products such as hairspray and perfume can actually eat away at turquoise and that can't be restored. When you are finished wearing your turquoise jewelry its important to wipe it down with a soft cloth, make sure you get any of the body oils, any sort of residue from your skin off of the turquoise after you wear it.

How to Store Pearl Jewelry

Thursday, March 19, 2009

Pearl jewelry in particular is very delicate and requires proper storage. Always store pearls in a soft, non-abrasive environment. This can include anything from a Chinese silk pouch to the soft suede lining of a jewelry box. Keep in mind that pearls should not be stored with other jewelry since the soft surface of the pearl can be easily scratched and damaged. All it takes is a few too many rubs against your diamond earrings to permanently ruin the smooth, lacquered surface of your favorite pearls. lavender-pearl-necklac

Also, though storing necklaces by hanging them is a common method to prevent tangling, pearl necklaces should always be stored flat. Since they are strung together with delicate fabric threads, hanging pearl necklaces can stretch them out. The only way to fix a stretched out pearl necklace is to have it restrung, which can be costly depending on the intricacy of the design.

The carpet will form the centrepiece of Sotheby’s inaugural series of sales in Doha and be sold alongside other objects in the Arts of the Islamic World auction on 19 March 2009. The carpet is traditionally believed to have been created as a gift for the tomb of the Prophet Mohammad in Medina and was commissioned by “Gaekwar” Kande Rao, the Maharaja of Baroda. The intended gift was clearly never delivered as the Maharaja died before he made the donation and the carpet therefore remained in his family. Tahitian Pearl Guide

Monday, December 29, 2008

Tahitian pearl is indigenous to French Polynesia. Since ages it is praised of its large size and exotic beauty. It is also known as Black South Sea cultured pearl. The specialty of this pearl is its rainbow coloring which is a unique contribution of Pinctada margaritifera. Pinctada margaritifera is the Black Lipped Oyster mostly found in French Polynesia.

The oyster is very sensitive to any sort of pollutants available in the environment. It can not be produced anywhere. The only culture place is in lagoons where the climate, biology and ecology all are just suitable to the needs of farming. Quite naturally, the large sized oyster produces large sized pearl. The temperature of the water does all the magic. It exclusively determines the thickness and brilliance of the pearl.

A Tahitian pearl has different layers of aragonite which is entirely dependent on the length of stay within the oyster. The multitude of layers of aragonite functions as a 'diffracting grating' which enables the breaking of light into a sparkling spectrum. Tahitian pearl radiates iridescent light due to interference, a combination of reflection and refraction.

Baroque Pearls-Fresh Water Pearls

Saturday, December 13, 2008

Baroque Pearls are the freshwater pearls that are defined by a specific feature of having an irregular, undefined, and unusual shape. Baroque pearls do not have a specific shape. Most of the freshwater pearls are the baroque pearls as these pearls are the mantle tissue nucleated pearls instead of the bead-nucleated ones. Thus, they do not have a perfect shape, but are generally found in oval or ovoid shapes.

Tahitian pearl is the most valuable and expensive of pearls in the category of baroque pearls. The Tahitian pearls are the cultured saltwater pearls and requires comparatively more time to culture as compared to the other pearls. This eventually increases the depth of the nacre, and this gradually adds to it’s increased price. The Tahitian pearl farm harvests yield about 40% of the baroque and the semi-baroque pearls.

Then are the Akoya pearls, commonly referred as the cultures saltwater pearls. Here, the baroque shape of an Akoya pearl is different from the freshwater baroque pearl. This difference can be noticed easily as the akoya pearls are the bead-nucleated pearls possessing a perfect, spherical bead inside the mollusk. Therefore, at the time of its formation, this akoya pearl changes into baroque pearls that have a small tail coming form the sharp point at the back of the rounded front. You can describe it as a teardrop shaped pearl in other words.

The south sea cultured baroque pearls are found very rarely nowadays as compared to the other types of pearls. These unique and unusual gems are the first choice of the jewelry lovers and jewelry designers. Its unparallel luster and exotic beauty has achieved a premium command in the world market of pearls. You will get these baroque pearls either in small lots or as individual pearls, but it is not available n loose strand like the other pearls. This is so as it is very difficult to make full strands of these pearls.

Pearl Quality-Pearl Buying Guide

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

First of all, all the pearls available and sold in the market today are all cultured pearls and natural pearls are rarity. These cultured pearls come with different names such as Fresh Water pearls, Sea water Akoya pearls, South sea pearls and Tahitian pearls. They all come in different sizes, shapes and colors.

There are SIX factors that determine the value of pearls:

  1. Pearl luster : It describes the shininess in a pearl and is a combination of surface brilliance and inner glow. A very good luster means it has higher pearl value.
  2. Pearl Nacre : The iridescent internal layer of a mollusk shell. It is a natural substance oyster secretes to protect its sensitive flesh. The thin nacre is very prone to peeling and chipping whereas thicker layer commands more value because of its greater luster depth.
  3. Pearl Surface : If outer surface is very clean and have very few blemishes such pearls carry higher value. Higher quality of pearls have mirror like finish and without any blemishes on its surface.
  4. Pearl Size : Pearls are commonly measured in millimeters (mm) in their diameter. Large size pearls carry higher prices. Even 1 mm makes the difference. The average most sold pearls today are between 6.5mm and 7.5mm and are preferred choice of many young women. Depending upon age, taste, status and styles many go for higher sizes as well.
  5. Pearl Color: Surface color or body color. Most irradiated or dyed pearls have surface colors. The natural pearl colors are white, black, champagne, green, gray, aqua and gold. Again within each category there are common overtones. White with rose overtones look great especially on fair skin and the cream or the golden overtones look fabulous on darker complexions. Most important is woman's taste and preference.
  6. Pearl Shape : The perfect round shape always have high pearl values but near round or off round are very much common, great in demand and sold everyday. Pearl necklaces are not restricted to round shape pearls only and other shapes like tear drop, pear, potato, coin and irregular baroque shape pearls are equally popular among women and commonly used by jewelers and designers alike.

Chocolate pearls

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

An extremely new and a different type of pearl have recently entered the market in the year 2000. It flourished with the name “chocolate pearls” because of their attractive and dark brown colors. They are well known for their purity and modesty. The chocolate pearls are found very rarely as compared to the other pearls. They are made by a proprietary beaching method. The unusual color in the chocolate pearls was the result of the irradiation treatment and in the process; no artificial color is added actually.

Although the chocolate pearls are dominated by the brown color, there are some secondary colors as well dominating it. It has little or no orientation, but the luster of the chocolate pearls ranges form medium to high. The nacre coloration is very even and a light coloration is seen near the nucleus interface.

The chocolate pearls are made by altering the melanin pigment of the natural pearl’s color with the help of proprietary technologies. They have an unusual bronze, copper or rust-brown color with very string and iridescent overtones. Dyes and coloring agents are not used in the making of chocolate pearls. The chocolate pearls are very expensive because they are found very rarely.

The dyed chocolate pearls can be categorized under the category of “treated pearls” that can be made available to you significantly at a lower price. The chocolate color obtains its impressive and astonishing brown colors through the bleaching process and the heat that is being applied to the fancy colored Tahitian pearls.

Japanese pearls-What are Japanese pearls?

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Many people are asking about the difference between the pearls that we are cultivating in our pearl farm and Japanese pearls, so we would like to spend some time to talk about Japanese pearls today.

Most of the Japanese freshwater pearls are cultivated in China these days because of their pollution problem. Both freshwater pearls and are Akoya pearls are loosely called by laymen as Japanese pearls in the world of fashion and pearl jewellery. However, Akoya means Marine water in Japanese language. Japanese Akoya pearls are well known for their thick nacre and amazing luster. They have classic quality and grace.

Japanese Akoya pearls are harvested from small oysters Pincada fucata ; it is a small oyster have average size 6 to 7 cm. Best time to harvest these Akoya pearls are the hottest and coldest time of year, in this time period oysters are dormant. Pearls harvested in some other time of year have thin nacre and dull luster.

Kokichi Mikimoto a visionary from Japan invented a technique for culturing Akoya pearls. He also patented technique of culturing pearls. These pearls were primarily cultivated in sea water off the coastal area of Japan. To form beautiful Akoya pearl, small bead of mantle tissue is inserted inside the oyster and then those oysters are left to grow in Sea water or fresh water. Oyster then secretes layers of thick nacre over that irritant which results into formation of high quality, lustrous pearl.

Natural color of pearl is completely dependent upon the specie and climatic conditions of water. In 3-5 years, pearl grows completely into nice quality pearl with thick nacre. Growth is constantly monitored during growth period to get good harvest. Bead inserted in Akoya oyster (Pinctada fucata martensii) is very small for formation of perfect Akoya pearl. Akoya oyster very rarely produces more than one pearl.

Pearl Tips-How to choose fine quality pearl jewelry

It is very important to determine difference between fine quality pearls and average pearls. Quality of pearls depends upon luster, thickness & quality of nacre, surface quality, color, shape and size.

Luster: Luster of pearl is the most important value-determining factor of pearls. Fine quality pearls has intense bright luster that illuminates from within. You can check the luster of pearls by examining it under fluorescent light. Never examine pearls against black background.

Color and overtone: There are two colors of pearls, body colors and overtones. White colored pearl with ‘rose’ overtone is most rare and desirable. Cream-colored pearls are not so expensive. Value of pearl depends upon intensity of color. Darker toned pearl are more expensive than lighter toned pearls. Common natural colors available are white, gray, black, blue, gold, pink and green. Always make sure that pearls you are buying are not artificially dyed, especially golden and black pearls are often dyed.

Surface of pearls: Always examine surface for any imperfection. Such imperfection of surface of pearl are called as surface blemishes. Finer quality pearls have very less surface blemishes. It is almost impossible to get pearl without any surface blemishes.

Shape: Next thing to consider while choosing pearls are shape of pearls. There are three significant shapes of pearls symmetrical, spherical and baroque pearls. Perfectly round pearl is rarest and most desirable. Teardrop or pear shaped pearls are symmetrical pearls. Symmetrical pearls are most commonly used for making jewelry. Baroque pearls are pearls without any shape. These pearls are least expensive but they are gaining popularity because of their natural look.

Size: Last but not the least, size of the pearl. Larger pearls are rarer and most expensive.

Pearl cross-Making a Pearl cross

There are a different variety of Arts and Crafts projects that people like you are highly interested in. these projects not only include paper and cloth activities, but it also includes beaded projects. Today, I am going to talk about how to make a pearl beaded cross.

Firstly, to make a pearl beaded cross, you should collect all the material that will be required to carry on the project. You will need about 100-110 beads or pearls that are ranging in size about 3mm or more than that and cut three fishing line about 0.25mm that is about 70-90cm each.

Now you can start with making your pearl cross. The first step in the process is to string five pearls and then cross the fishing line through one, pulling it tight. Then, string three more pearls and cross them from the middle pearl. Then string four pearls on the either side of the line i.e. on the right side as well as the left side, crossing each line back to the first pearl. Repeat the process in the same way for both the sides.

The next step is to cross the line back the second and the third pearl from the second step. Here, string four pearls and cross them back the first bead in this step. Cross the line back at the forth and the first pearl, from the second step. Then string and cross one pearl with both the lines. Here, at this point string three pearls from the middle pearl and repeat this process thrice. String five pearls and then tie. Make another piece similarly like this as you will need two pieces.

The Charming Round Pearls

There are very few accessories more elegant and more classic than a pearl jewelry. Pearls are available in generally round or spherical shape. The perfectly round shaped pearls are a small amount of the pearls that are cultivated.
The Round Pearls are the one that while growing inside the oyster develops grooves, ridges or rings around the edge of the pearl and this determines the shape of the pearl that we refer as ringed or circled. These Round Pearls are of the greatest value in the market. They are found very rarely than the other pearl shapes and this makes them more valuable. Real Pearls or Fake Pearls

Sunday, November 16, 2008

There are several methods to determine the differences between real pearls and imitations per the following:

First, when rubbing two pearls against each other, the pearl imitation feels slippery, while the real pearl feels rough and the layers of nacre will leave a powdery residue.

Second, when rubbing glass with pearls, the imitation pearl leaves no scratches, while the real pearl leaves scratches of pearl powder. After the powder is wiped off with cotton cloth or hand, one can feel that the genuine pearl is not damaged.

Third, although not slightly, if you run a pearl over the edge of your teeth. A real pearl will feel sandy and gritty, while a fake pearl will have a very smooth texture.

Fourth, if look at the pearls carefully, either out in the sunlight or under intense light. Fake pearls usually appear perfect without any flaws. And real pearls usually have flaws and imperfections such as minor color variations and shape differences.

Fifth, if you put pearls under a magnifying glass, the surface of real pearls look rough, while the surface of fake pearls would appear very smooth.

Six, although not true for Majorca pearls and high quality man-made seashell pearls most of the time, but especially for plastic imitations, you can tell the difference when you weigh the pearls in your hand. If it feels light, it is probably an imitation. Real pearls have a higher density and therefore they are a bit heavier.

Seven, if you really can`t tell if a pearl is real or not, and you do not mind losing an extra pearl, you can also cut it in half with a knife or smash it open with a hammer. The inside of real pearls consists of thin layers of nacre that looks like the layers of an onion.

Under normal circumstances, the above methods should be sufficient. However, if you still can`t decide if it is an imitation or a real pearl, you can get your pearl to be examined or x-rayed by a certified independent gemologist, which may be costly, however, it can provide a good piece of mind when it comes to determining the status of a pearl.

Keshi Pearl Facts

Keshi pearls are the pearls that are loved by the Human beings and rejected by the oysters or mollusks. These pearls are formed in a very unique way as compared to the other methods of pearl formation. When the piece of a shell gets trapped in the mollusk, it ensues an infection. The oyster starts healing itself by forming nacre layers on the intruding substance to prevent further irritation. Till the oyster is alive, the layers of nacre keep on forming and the result is a beautiful and divine: A Keshi Pearl.

Although, Keshi pearls have been excluded from the category of natural pearls because they are not formed naturally and is a result of the pearl culturing process; but it gives the looks and shine much better than the natural pearls. Nowadays these pearls have become exceptional and infrequent. This is because the farmers have started x-raying the oysters to find out if the nucleus is present in it or not or whether it is expelled out. If an oyster is found expelling its nucleus then they are re-nucleated before the formation of a Keshi pearl. This process has made Keshi pearls even rarer than they actually were.

But even then, Keshi pearls have always remained popular because the solid nacre imparts a very high luster and excellent quality to the pearl.

How Much Do Pearls Cost? Or Pearl Value Factor - Shape

Monday, October 27, 2008

Pearl Shapes are generally round or spherical. Truly round pearls are a small percentage of all the pearls that are cultivated. Pearl shapes can be round to near-round, to a pill shape, coin shape, drops, or completely free form.
Pearls are graded into three major categories. These are Spherical, Symmetrical, and Baroque. Spherical are either round or near round, non-round Symmetrical pearls have shapes that are the same on each side, and each side is a mirror image of the other. Baroque is the term used to describe irregularly shaped pearls.
Sometimes the pearl, when growing inside the oyster, develops rings, either grooves, or ridges around the circumference of the pearl and then the shape of the pearl is modified by the adjective of "circled" or "ringed".
The round or near round symmetrical pearls have the highest value. The round or spherical pearls are a much more rare than all of the other shapes and therefore more valuable. Round pearls can be as low as 2% of the entire harvest.
As in all the other pearl values, the value of roundness by itself does not guarantee a high price. When we consider pearl value, we must consider all seven value factors affect price.
As with all the Pearl Value factors, one trait does not guarantee a greater value. A perfectly round pearl with a dull and lusterless look is not going to be as beautiful as a slightly less round pearl that has a fantastic luster. Or a perfectly round pearl with surface irregularities will be appraised at a lesser amount than a less round pearl with a perfect surface.

Different types of cultured pearlsl

Sunday, October 19, 2008

Black pearls, frequently referred to as Black Tahitian Pearls, are highly valued because of their rarity; the culturing process for them dictates a smaller volume output and can never be mass produced. This is due to bad health and/or non-survival of the process, rejection of the nucleus (the small object such as a tiny fish, grain of sand or crab that slips naturally inside an oyster's shell or inserted by a human), and their sensitivity to changing climatic and ocean conditions. Before the days of cultured pearls, black pearls were rare and highly valued for the simple reason that white pearl oysters rarely produced natural black pearls, and black pearl oysters rarely produced any natural pearls at all. Since pearl culture technology, the black pearl oyster found in Tahiti and many other Pacific Island area has been extensively used for producing cultured pearls. The rarity of the black cultured pearl is now a "comparative" issue. The black cultured pearl is rare when compared to Chinese freshwater cultured pearls, and Japanese and Chinese Akoya cultured pearls, and is more valuable than these pearls. However, it is more abundant than the south sea pearl, which is more valuable than the black cultured pearl. This is simply due to the fact that the black pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera is far more abundant than the elusive, rare, and larger south sea pearl oyster - Pinctada maxima, which cannot be found in lagoons, but which must be dived for in a rare number of deep ocean habitats. Black cultured pearls from the black pearl oyster — Pinctada margaritifera — are NOT south sea pearls, although they are often mistakenly described as black south sea pearls. In the absence of an official definition for the pearl from the black oyster, these pearls are usually referred to as "black Tahitian pearls" The correct definition of a south sea pearl — as described by CIBJO and the GIA — is a pearl produced by the Pinctada maxima pearl oyster. South sea pearls are the color of their host Pinctada maxima oyster — and can be white, silver, pink, gold, cream, and any combination of these basic colors, including overtones of the various colors of the rainbow displayed in the pearl nacre of the oyster body itself.

6 Characteristics of Pearls

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) bases the value and beauty of pearls on their rating of six characteristics: luster (the deep-seated glow that seems to emanate from within the pearl and that results from the thickness of the nacre), nacre thickness, color, surface perfection, shape, and harmony (the overall appearance of pearls as they appear on a strand or a piece of multi-pearl jewelry). We feel that the pearls in our jewelry should all have similar grades of color, luster, nacre thickness, shape and surface perfection.
Pearls are measured in millimeters. When Japanese cultured pearls first hit the market in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, they were very small in size, usually 3 to 4mm. Today, standard-sized pearls range from 5 to 7mm in diameter, which is approximately 1/4 of an inch. Pearls larger than 7mm are exponentially expensive. They are the birthstone for the month of June.

Mabe pearls - Pendent

Thursday, October 16, 2008

A mabe pearl is defined as an assembled and a worked blister pearl that is attached to the shell. It is a hemispherical shaped pearl that is grown against the interior of the shell of the oyster instead of growing inside its tissue. Now let’s see the creation of the mabe pearls. Once the blister pearls are developed in the oyster, they are worked upon to make it a mabe pearl. In this process, the blister pearls are cut out of the shell with a circle bit drill. The nucleus from the pearl is taken off and it is replaced with a resin. The back of the pearl is coated with a small piece of mother of pearl to make the mabe pearl appear complete. They are on and average about 8m in size. Mabe pearls are the perfect pearls to make any jewelry. The cultured mabe pearls are used for making jewelry like earrings and rings rather than stringing them on the necklaces. These pearls are the beautiful pearls having a very high luster.

How to care for your cultured pearls

Monday, October 13, 2008

Pearls are very soft and need special care. They never should be tossed on top of or next to other gems in a jewelry box. Store them in a jewelry pouch.

Only use jewelry cleaners labeled as safe for pearls.
Never use an ultrasonic cleaner.
Never steam-clean pearls.
Never use (or expose pearls) to dish or wash detergents, bleaches, powdered cleansers, baking soda, or ammonia-based cleaners (like Windex).
Never use toothbrushes, scouring pads or abrasive materials to clean pearls.
Do not wear pearls when their string is wet. Wet strings stretch and attract dirt, which is hard to remove.
Do not hang pearls to dry.
Take your pearls off when applying cosmetics, hair spray, and perfume, or when showering or swimming.
Avoid wearing pearls with rough fabrics like Shetland wool.
Have your pearls restrung once a year if you wear them often.
After you wear pearls, just wipe them off with a soft cloth or chamois, which may be dry or damp. This will prevent dirt from accumulating and keep perspiration, which is slightly acidic, from eating away at the pearl nacre. You can even use a drop of olive oil on the cloth to help maintain their luster.

If pearls have not been kept clean and are very dirty, they can be cleaned by your jeweler or they can be cleans using special pearl cleaner. Pearl Oasis sells pearl-safe jewelry cleaner. Be careful using other types of jewelry cleaner or soap. Some liquid soaps, such as Dawn, can damage pearls. Pay attention to the areas around the drill holes where dirt may tend to collect.

Care of Pearl Jewelry & Storage of Pearls

Care of Pearl Jewelry
Pearls are organic gemstones that are vulnerable to acid, alkaline and different humidity levels. Perfume and hairspray, which contain alcohol and harmful acids, should be avoided on the areas where pearls are worn. Perspiration can also harm the beauty of pearls, dulling their beautiful luster. Therefore, after wearing them, they should be wiped with a damp (not wet), soft cloth or a silicon cloth. Be careful not to dip pearls in water or wear them while bathing, as water can weaken the silk thread. Do not leave them in direct sunlight or expose them to high temperatures. If pearls happen to come into contact with substances such as vinegar, fruit juices or detergents, immediately wipe that substance off.
Storage of Pearls
Be sure to store your pearls isolated in a compartmentalized jewelry box so that they don't come into contact with other jewelry.Do not store your pearl jewelry in a security box for long periods of time, since this may cause the pearls to dehydrate. It is recommended to take the pearls out of such boxes frequently.

Sea Pearls-The Big and Large South Sea Pearls

Saturday, September 27, 2008

A south sea pearl is one that is produced by a mollusk named as Pinctada maxima. Recently, these pearls are cultured in areas around the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Myanmar, Philippines, Australia and Indonesia. The south sea pearls are among the largest pearls in the world. The average size is about 13mm and it is available in a range of different sizes, like 9mm to 20mm.

The south sea pearls grow to a much larger size. This fact is associated to different reasons like the larger size of the mollusk in which it grows, the period of time the pearl remains inside the oyster to grow, the size of the bead implanted in to it and the environment of the oyster. As the oyster is of a considerable large size, it can accept a bead of a larger size. This allows the deposition of the nacre layers at a very rapid rate around the nucleus, particularly in the warm water that helps in speeding up the oyster’s metabolism. Also the growth period of the south sea pearls takes a longer time as compared to the other pearls. These pearls are harvested after minimum tow years allowing for a larger size. more information here

Mabe Pearls

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

TThere are a variety of pearls found on the earth. In this article, let’s talk about the mabe pearls.

A mabe pearl is a worked blister pearl attached to the shell of the oyster. The appearance of the mabe pearls occur occasionally in nature. The shape of the pearl is hemispherical and the growth of the pearl takes place against the interior of the oyster’s shell rather than growing inside the tissue. They develop on the shell. Then, there are cultures mabe pearls, whose growth is controlled by human interference. In this process a hemispherical nucleus is used instead of a rounder nucleus, and this nucleus is implanted against the oyster’s shell instead of implanting it within its tissues. Thus, the developed pearl takes the shape of the nucleus and hence it is hemisphere in shape.

The size of the mabe pearls depends on the size of the nucleus present in the interior of the mollusk’s shell. The larger the nucleus, larger is the pearl and vice versa.More information

The Precious Round Pearls-Freshwater Pearls

Friday, September 19, 2008

The shape of the pearls is often found round or spherical. The perfectly round pearls are a very small part of the pearls that are being cultivated. The other shapes of the pearl include round to nearly round, pill shape, coin shape, drops, or completely free forms of shapes. Basically, the pearls are classified into three major categories: spherical, symmetrical and baroque. This shape of the pearls is determined by the oyster growing inside it. It may develop ridges, rings or grooves around the circumference of the pearl and this modifies the shape of the pearl.
The round and the symmetrical pearls are of great value as compared to the other pearls. The reason behind this fact is that the round pearls are found very rarely and are most difficult to grow as compared to the other shapes of the pearls, and thus they procure the highest value in the pearl industry. The production of round pearls is as low as 2% of the entire harvest.
If you want to surprise your loved ones or special ones, you can do this by presenting a pearl necklace made of only the precious round pearls. This will surely please the person to a great extent and you will be able to win his/ her heart easily. The beauty of round pearls is not easy to define. It has a charming beauty, exotic luster and a clear surface with no surface irregularities seen on it.
It is so simple to own one of these beautiful pieces.More information here
