May Birthstone – Emerald
Tuesday, May 5, 2009
Cleopatra wore lavish embellishments of emerald, this precious stone being her favorite jewelry. These breath-taking crystals were mined by the ancient Egyptians under the extreme conditions of desert heat, snakes and scorpions. The mines were claimed by Cleopatra as her own, during her reign, as she took extreme fascination to the green gems. It was noted how Cleopatra often gifted her visitors with this May birthstone, carved in her image.
A large emerald is usually very expensive as it is very rare. Growing within metamorphic rocks, the slow development and the growth in size is often restricted by the rock. Hence, finding a big stone is a very special condition increasing the emerald’s value. Care must be observed to protect it from hard blows because it is possible to get broken, due to the inclusions within.
It is often believed that an Emerald jewelry can bring wisdom, patience and growth to its wearer. May birthstone jewelry is best presented as a gift by a lover who would want to incorporate all of the mentioned virtues in the present relationship. After all, who does not wish for love to be strong and to endure all things.

Cleaning Your Emerald Jewellery
Things Required
- Soft Cloth
- Lukewarm Water
- Mild Liquid Soap
- Soft-bristled Toothbrush
- Small Bowls
- Towel
Procedure
- Before cleaning the emerald jewelry, you need to polish it with a clean, dry and soft cloth. This will remove the loose deposits of oils and dirt from the gemstone.
- After you have polished the jewellery well, it is time to start the cleaning process. Make a soapy solution, by mixing few drops of mild liquid soap with lukewarm water, in a small bowl.
- The next step is to scrub the jewellery, to remove the tough dirt sticking onto it. A soft-bristled toothbrush is the best bet, because it won't leave scratches on the gemstone, when you scrub it.
- Scrub the toothbrush, dipped in the soapy solution, all over the piece of jewelry. Make sure that you have removed dirt from the hard-to-reach areas of the jewelry as well.
- When you find that all the dirt has been removed from the emerald jewelry, rinse it with lukewarm water.
- Now, submerge the jewellery in another bowl, filled with lukewarm water. Leave it for a minute, so that the leftover soap residue gets removed.
- Remove the jewelry from the water and dry it, using a clean soft towel.
- After you are done with the cleaning process, store your precious emerald jewelry in a cool and dry place or wear it again.
Tips
- To remove tough dirt and oil from the emerald jewelry, it is suggested to get it cleaned from a professional jewelry cleaner.
- Never use harsh soap or abrasive cleaners, to clean the gemstone. It might damage the stone.

Famous Emeralds
Friday, February 27, 2009
Caravel Pendant: The Hermitage Museum in Russia is home to one of the finest specimens of carved emeralds ever created. The Spanish pendant, which dates back to the late 16th century, is in the shape of a caravel and is made entirely of emeralds and gold.
Patricia Emerald: The 632 carat Patricia Emerald is considered to be one of the greatest emeralds ever discovered. The stone, which was found in the Chivor Mines, is named after the daughter of the mine owner. What makes this emerald exceptional is that while most uncut emeralds have six sides, the Patricia Emerald is twelve sided or dihexagonal.
Unnamed Carved Emerald: On display in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is an unnamed cabochon, a beautiful specimen of the gemstone. The emerald, which was found as a rough stone in Colombia, is carved in the shape of a woman's head, with the pyrite, or fool's gold, crystals that occurred naturally within the emerald forming the woman's hair and earring.Labels: Emerald

Emerald buying guide, Care, Cleaning & Storing Tips
Wednesday, November 26, 2008
Emerald buying guide Look for deep, medium tone green when you're looking for an emerald. Emeralds vary in color from pale yellow-green to nearly black. The most valuable are pure, transparent grass green - the color that gives Ireland its nickname of the Emerald Isles.
Few emeralds are free of inclusions or faults, and emerald pricing accounts for that fact. In addition, nearly all emeralds sold as gemstones have been oil-finished or filled with resin to give the stone a smooth surface. If you're buying an emerald, assume that it has been treated in some way unless otherwise told. Untreated emeralds of high quality will fetch a premium price.
Emerald care Because emeralds are seldom found without fissures and surface cracks, it's common for them to have been oiled, waxed or filled with resin. Because of the likelihood of those treatments, special care is called for when cleaning and handling emeralds.
Everyday cautions Avoid situations where your emerald could knock against things and be damaged. In addition, remove your emerald rings when doing dishes or immersing your hands in water as soapy solutions and hot water can damage the finish on the stone. Finally, avoid sudden temperature changes which could cause color change and cracking in your emerald.
Cleaning your emerald jewelry Use warm water with a very mild detergent and a soft brush to clean your emerald jewelry. Between washing, clean emerald jewelry with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner or steam cleaner on emerald jewelry, and avoid harsh chemicals. Every 2-5 years, have an experienced jeweler re-oil your emerald to keep it looking its best.
Storing your emerald jewelry Store emeralds in velvet lined boxes with individual compartments or inside cotton bags in a jewelry box. Avoid storing them in the same compartments of bags as diamonds and sapphires to prevent scratches to the emeralds. Also avoid extreme temperature changes and prolonged exposure to bright light which can change the color of your emeralds. Read more hereLabels: Emerald
