Jewelry Box Buying Guide
Friday, May 29, 2009
Leather Jewelry Boxes Boxes for men’s jewelry, often called “valets” are simpler than women’s versions. They’re typically wrapped in leather and may be a single layer tray with compartments or two layers with a lid. They’re designed to hold watches and cuff links.
Wooden Jewelry Boxes Wooden jewelry boxes are often the largest. Most contain several drawers and possibly one or two cabinets with glass or wood doors. They’re frequently constructed of oak or mahogany, but other woods such as teak or burl wood may be used. Women’s jewelry boxes can range from very small chests designed to tuck into a drawer to large bureaus on legs. Most boxes fall in the middle range and provide ample storage for earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets. The drawers may slide out or lift out accordion style. Wooden boxes for jewelry are traditionally have a high gloss lacquer. Some are intricately carved or ornately painted while others are sleek and simple. Drawers are usually lined with velvet and may have necklace hooks or a mirror inside the lid.
Fabric Jewelry Boxes Fabric jewelry boxes are becoming increasingly popular. Usually smaller than wooden boxes, they’re frequently lined with a combination of satin and velvet. They may have decorative beading on the outside and come in a wide range of colors so as to match the room’s decor. These boxes look lovely displayed on a dresser. Fabric boxes also tend to be more inexpensive jewelry boxes than those made of wood.
Children’s Jewelry Boxes Children have many uses for fine jewelry boxes. Baby necklaces, charm bracelets, and earrings can all be stored in a plush jewelry box. And just because the jewelry box is authentic doesn’t mean the jewelry has to be. Children can store replica and vintage jewelry for when they play dress up like Mom and Dad.
The solution to getting a cool jewelry box for a child is to know what the child likes. If she’s into music, a musical jewelry box will be a better choice over one that has a cartoon character theme. In any case, there are a number of cool jewelry boxes for children to choose from. It all comes down to what the child considers “cool”.
On the other hand, boxes for children’s jewelry are usually more about the box than its contents. They can be cardboard or wood wrapped in a licensed character’s image or fabric. Inexpensive jewelry boxes have a simple latch. When opened, they play a song for a twirling ballerina. Boxes suitable for an older child may be wrapped in brightly-colored leather or fabric. They’re often lined with satin rather than velvet and have one to three compartments and a mirror.
Cool jewelry boxes for children come in a variety of forms. Often they’re made of thinner wood and emblazoned with popular cartoon characters. Others are made of more luxurious woods yet have a simple design. Some even have music boxes built right in.
Men’s Jewelry Boxes In most cases they are referred to as valet boxes. Valet boxes are designed to hold men’s “everyday” items such as rings, loose change, wallets, keys, watches, etc. A valet box is a more luxurious way for men to keep their items in one place, rather than shoving everything in a dresser drawer or empty ashtray. Other types of cool jewelry boxes for men include watch boxes (designed to store and display your watch collection) and cigar boxes (which can be used to store cigars or as a keep-all for your pocket items). So as you can see, there are such things as cool jewelry boxes for men.
Women’s Jewelry Boxes A jewelry box can be a lovely companion piece to an engagement ring or gold necklace. A velvet-lined jewelry box can be a great way store or show off your most precious valuables. Jewelry boxes can also be customized to suit taste or preferred functionality. They can be crafted to be thin or large, 3-drawer or 4-drawer, or with panels, in a variety of woods. Many boxes can be built in teak, cherry, maple, oak, walnut, or quilted maple.
Women have a number of different types of jewelry boxes to choose from. Jewelry boxes are often crafted in luxurious woods such as maple, oak, walnut, etc. A wood jewelry box gives your collection a solid foundation and protects your pieces from the elements. Some jewelry boxes even contain glass inlays and ornate carvings. Glass and even ceramic makes of jewelry boxes are also quite popular among women and provide their own grace and beauty. Some larger jewelry boxes have multiple swinging doors and compartments, and even finely carved legs. Many jewelry boxes are lockable to protect the precious jewels inside from theft or being lost.
Travel Jewelry Boxes Travel boxes for jewelry need to be specially designed to ensure the jewelry will remain secure and organized. Popular styles include the small locking box with lined compartments and the fabric roll.
Travel boxes usually have compartments that touch the inside of the lid or slide out of the case. The compartments are divided into one large one for necklaces and two or more smaller ones for earrings, rings, and bracelets.
Musical Jewelry Box This type of jewelry box combines the musical component of your typical music box with the storage space of a jewelry box. Musical jewelry boxes function similar to music boxes - you lift the lid and the music starts. However, these types of jewelry boxes also contain drawers and storage space for jewelry.
Travel Jewelry Case Made for transport, travel jewelry cases are jewelry boxes designed to handle the bumps and dings of travel. These types of boxes are fashionable but serve a more protective purpose than display.
Valet Jewelry Box Valet boxes are jewelry boxes for men. These boxes serve as a keep-all for everyday items such as rings, keys, loose change, cell phone, etc. Valet boxes are designed specifically for men and are unlike your typical jewelry box.
Watch Box This type of box is intended specifically for watch storage. Watch boxes come in single and multiple watch capacity, and are available in many different sizes and styles. Asides from this, you may have noticed a specific type of watch box which also called ‘watch winder’, which rotates the watch in a circular pattern to keep the self-winding mechanism of automatic watches in motion. If left in rest, these types of watches often stop. A watch winder eliminates this problem. Jewelry Box Lining The lining is the interior of a jewelry box. Jewelry box lining is often lush and consists of fine fabrics. The lining is designed to protect your jewelry but also present them in a fashionable way.

The History of Engagement Rings
Since that first engagement, the betrothal ring has a rich history of change.
- The tradition of placing both the engagement ring and wedding band on the fourth finger of the left hand stems from a Greek belief that a certain vein in that finger, the vena amoris, runs directly to the heart.
- Posy rings, which were inscribed with love poems and messages, were popular betrothal rings from the Middle Ages until Victorian times.
- The smallest engagement ring on record was given to two-year-old Princess Mary, daughter of Henry VIII, on the event of her betrothal to the infant Dauphin of France, son of King Francis I, in 1518. Mary's tiny gold ring was set with a diamond.
- Hearts were favorite motifs for engagement and wedding rings during the 17th and 18th centuries. These rings often used rubies (signifying love) and diamonds (signifying eternity).
- Colored stones were the gem of choice for engagement rings in the 18th and 19th centuries.
- The Tiffany, or solitaire, setting was introduced in the late 19th century.
- The "princess ring," sporting three to five large diamonds in a row across the top, was fashionable in the United States in the early 20th century. The three-stone style is extremely popular today.
- In the early part of the 20th century, platinum was the metal of choice for engagement rings because of its strength and durability in holding a diamond. However, platinum was declared a strategic metal during World War II, and its usage was restricted to military purposes. This led to the rise of both yellow and white gold in bridal jewelry. During the past 10 years, platinum has made a dramatic comeback.

Gemstone Ratings
Thursday, May 28, 2009
When buying a colored gemstone, many people do not pay adequate attention to the gemstone’s rating. Since colored gemstones are less expensive than diamonds and their colors tend to help hide flaws in the stone, people tend to be more forgiving with their analysis of the gems they purchase. However, when determining whether a particular piece of jewelry is a great deal or whether it is overpriced, knowing the gemstone’s rating is very important.
What The Gemstone Grades Mean A Rating: An A rated gemstone is a good quality gemstone. The gem is well cut, has a good transparency and lets light through, and has few inclusions. For top quality gemstones, there is also an AA and AAA rating. These ratings are reserved for exceptional gems, especially with precious stones like rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Semi-precious stones such as amethyst and garnet seem to pass more easily with a AA rating.
B Rating: B rated gemstones have minor to light inclusions, and the color of the stone isn’t the optimal color. The stone is still transparent, however, and many B quality stones are still used for smaller gemstones in jewelry.
C Rating: C rated gemstones have visible inclusions, as well as portions that are not entirely transparent. The translucency does not allow as much light to pass through, which makes these stones less sparkly and more flat (dull) to the eye. C rated gemstones are rarely used in larger sizes, and are sometimes used as chip stones in pave and micro pave sizes.
D Rating: D rated gemstones are heavily included, obviously translucent and allow minimal light through. D rated gemstones are suitable for use as cabochons or rock-like pieces, but do not have a high value.
Gemstone Rating Tips to Keep In Mind Unlike a specific grading report where a gemstone is evaluated clearly on each of the 4 C’s, a gemstone’s grade is somewhat open to interpretation and can be fuzzy. Gemstone grades can be particularly confusing to the untrained eye of a consumer, and some unscrupulous jewelers take advantage of this fact by inflating the grading on their colored gemstones.
When in doubt, or when buying a very expensive gemstone, ask for the full grading report that has detailed information on the 4 C’s to evaluate the gemstone’s worth. For most gemstone purchases however, if the color is the hue what you want and the ring looks beautiful and sparkly to the eye, it is probably a good quality gem.

Earring An earring is a piece of jewelry that is worn on the ear. They are worn byboth genders, although until recently in western cultures, they weremore typically worn by women, but are making a comeback in males.
Bracelets Diamond bracelets are superb; everything about them from the design to using other gemstones in conjunction with the diamonds is stunning. There are several styles of diamond Bracelets including bangles, tennis bracelets, cuffs, charms and other dazzling choices. Diamonds can be set in gold or silver, whichever you choose. You will discover excellent designs in both of these precious metals.
A diamond tennis bracelet is still a traditional selection that is very much in demand. It is the ideal present for celebrating an anniversary or a birthday or to give to your partner when you get married. They are available in both traditional and contemporary designs.Diamond jewelry bracelets can start from $2000 if these are completely natural diamonds combined with some other precious stones like the sapphire or emeralds, etc. Chain bracelets where charms have been used may cost a lot less because here, instead of the complete bracelet, the diamond may only be in the charm.
If your diamond jewelry bracelet is in a hook pattern or like a bangle, then you should take special care of it. For convenience some diamond bracelets come off very easily and you have to be very careful with these, especially if they are very expensive.
Rings A finger ring is a band worn as type of ornamental jewellery around a finger; it is the most common current meaning of the word ring. Other types of metal bands worn as ornaments are also called 'rings,' such as arm rings and neck rings.Rings are worn by both men and women and can be of any quality.
Rings can be made of metal, plastic, wood, bone, glass, gemstone and other materials. They may be set with a "stone" of some sort, which is often a precious or semi-precious gemstone such as ruby, sapphire or emerald, but can also be of almost any material. There are various methods for determining proper ring size.
The signet ring, a ring designating nobility, is commonly worn on the little (fifth) finger of the right or left hand, depending on nationality. The bearer of the Iffland-Ring disposes the ring by will to someone who he regards as the most significant German-speaking actor.
Necklace There are many kinds of jewellery necklaces you can choose from meaning that you may have a difficult time in deciding what kind of jewellery necklace you like best. Necklaces can usually be differentiated according to their lengths and widths. For example, the choker is the shortest jewellery necklace at fourteen to sixteen inches long, it is followed by the princess necklace which is eighteen inches long.
The last type of jewellery necklace is the longest one, the opera necklace; this type of necklace is below the cleavage and is placed at the breastbone. Since the contemporary society has slowly accepted the wearing of jewellery by men, men have gladly accommodated the trend of this jewellery wearing.
Men's jewellery comes in different shapes, designs and sizes. Men's jewellery necklaces prove to be very popular because it gives men more to show as jewelry is concerned, particularly because a jewellery necklace is more visible to a viewer than is a ring. The types of men's jewellery necklaces are divided into two - the traditional and the trendy. Trendy men's jewellery necklaces are often necklaces that are modern versions of the classic designs of necklaces. Examples of trendy necklaces include stainless steel cross necklace, surf jewellery necklaces and chokers, and soul necklaces.

How to Clean Your Diamond Ring
Tuesday, May 26, 2009
- If you are working near the sink the first thing you should do is make sure the plug hole is covered by a mesh or plug to prevent losing your engagement ring down the hole. Place your diamond ring in the bowl. Squeeze some dish detergent on to it. Then pour boiling water on top. Leave for a few minutes.
- As soon as the water is cool enough for you to pick the ring up (2-3 minutes), take the toothbrush and scrub the ring thoroughly. Take time to get the bristles into all the cracks between the settings. Throw away the water in the bowl.
- Mix some fresh boiling water with more dish detergent in the bowl and place your diamond ring back in there to soak for about ten minutes
- Take your ring out of the bowl. Throw away the old water and rinse the bowl clean of any detergent. Put the ring back in the clean bowl and using fresh boiling water rinse the ring. Do this about three times. Then place the ring on a clean cotton cloth and allow to air dry. Do not use any kind of paper towel or tissue to dry your diamond ring as it will leave small fibre which will prevent a true sparkle.

Diamond Certificate
What's in a Certificate? A certificate is a blueprint of a loose diamond. Wholesalers, retailers, and consumers alike know a certificate as either a diamond grading report or diamond dossier. A certificate will tell a diamond’s exact measurements, weight, cut and overall quality. A certificate will precisely point out a diamond’s individual characteristics as well as be a useful tool when identifying a stone. When shopping for a loose diamond, considering stones that have a grading report will allow you to make an informed decision on which diamond will be ideal for you.
G.I.A G.I.A. is the number one, most respected laboratory in the world. Any diamond submitted to G.I.A. is ensured to have reliable and consistent grading. Anywhere from 3-6 separate gemologists will individually grade each and every diamond for an accurate final grade. G.I.A. grading reports have been considered to be a hallmark of integrity throughout the diamond world. G.I.A. issues two separate types of reports. One of the more common reports is the full issued G.I.A. document, which will have the full description of the diamond as well as a plotting of the grade setting clarity characteristics of that stone. This report is generally used for diamonds 1.00ct and above. The second type of report issued through G.I.A. is the Dossier, which is typically done on diamonds under a carat.
A.G.S. A.G.S. is known through out the diamond industry as grading top-notch ideal cut round diamonds. Their high standards surpass those of any other grading laboratory when considering color and clarity as well as cut. If a diamond has been graded by A.G.S. Lab, it has met the standards of what is considered the perfect proportions, polish, and symmetry; and has been given a grade of “ideal” or a “000” rating. A.G.S. Ideal cut round diamonds are highly sought after in today’s market.

How Diamond Prices Are Determined
Monday, May 25, 2009
Diamond prices are determined first by adding the cost of the rough diamond, the cost of cutting the diamond, and all other costs necessary to turn the rough diamond into a marketable diamond. Depending on the importance of the diamond, an independent company may be called in to certify the grade of the diamond based on color, cut, clarity, and weight.
At this point, the DIAMOND becomes more expensive each time it changes hands, until it finally reaches a retailer, where the price is raised a bit more. Before reaching the retailer, however, the diamond must travel from the mine, to the cutter and polisher, to the independent grading company, and then to the Primary market. Once it has reached the primary market, it will be purchased by diamond dealers and wholesalers, and from there it will be sold to retailers.
As you can see, the earlier you can purchase a diamond in the process, the lower the cost of the diamond will be – but not the value. The value is based on what the diamond will sell for in the market place – through a retailer.
If you own a DIAMOND, and you have no idea how much it is worth, you can have it appraised, but the appraisal may not be accurate. You will be better off obtaining a certificate through GIA – Gemological Institute of America. With the information on this certificate, you can use a cutter's guide to accurately determine what your diamond is worth.
There are also many diamond price calculators available. these can be found on the Internet, and many diamond dealers use these as well. You must realize, however, that before you can accurately price a diamond, without a Diamond Grade Report, you need to know quite a bit about diamonds, such as different cuts, clarity, color, and weight – and how each of those aspects adds to the value of a diamond, or decreases the value of the diamond as the case may be.

Tips on Buying Right Quality Stone
First of all, don't ask how much you should pay for a one-carat sapphire. A one carat precious stone can be worth few dollars or it can be worth up to $10.000. Quality makes the difference. Fortunately you can see differences in quality if you look at a lot of sapphire, ruby or emerald by looking side-by-side. Better color costs more, a lot more. Better clarity costs more. Better cut may cost a little more but it is worth it! The bigger the stone, the more it is per carat. Within each variety, prices are based on these four Cs, with color as the most important factor.
But different varieties have different price ranges. Some varieties are lower in price because they are readily available, some because the color isn't very popular (brown and yellow stones, for example), some because the material is relatively soft, and some because ...they have all the right stuff but no one knows it. There are plenty of examples of beautiful rare gemstones that cost less than gems that are less rare because they have a funny name, or people get them confused with an inexpensive variety or no one has ever heard of them. But enough about the injustice of the gem market.
We can break the price ranges of the different gem varieties down into five basic categories: traditional gemstones, new classics, connoisseur gems, collector gemstones, and affordable gems. These categories have basic price ranges, but, again lower quality stones or stones with less popular colors may cost less and stones with particularly fine quality or color may cost more. These price ranges are meant to give you a general idea of the relationship of prices between different kinds of gemstones and not to serve as a price list, since color and quality can make such a difference.
The traditional gemstones are ruby, emerald and blue sapphire. Because of their lasting appeal and distinguished history, ruby, emerald and sapphire are more valuable than other colored gemstones. Generally, ruby and emerald are also priced higher than a comparable quality sapphire due to rarity. For a one-carat stone of average to good quality in the varieties in this category, you can expect to pay between $250 and $10,000 per carat. Of course truly fine gems will cost more.
The new classics are gemstones that are the rising stars of gemstone jewelry: tanzanite, tourmaline, aquamarine, imperial topaz, and tsavorite garnet. These gemstones are sometimes available in standardized sizes but you really should look at some fine larger single stones to see why they have so many fans. Gems in this category range between $50 to $1,000 per carat for an average to good quality one carat stone, with a good example of tsavorite easily reaching $1500 per carat. depend on the size
Connoisseur gems are gemstones that have a more specialized market because they are more rare. These gemstones include black opal, jadeite, pink topaz, chrysoberyl cat's-eye, fancy colored sapphires, and rare stones like demantoid garnet and alexandrite. These gemstones are highly prized and prices range from $250 to $1000 per carat, although alexandrite with a good color change will command at least $2000 even in a one-carat size.
Collector's gems are not available in quantity to be marketed effectively so you get a lot of beauty for the money. This category includes spinel, zircon, moonstone, morganite and other beryls, and many rare gemstones. Red and hot pink spinels can command a few thousand per carat but most of the gems in this category will sell for hundreds not thousands.

Diamond Best Gift to All
Diamond jewellery is extremely popular as an everlasting possession and gift. It has a grace and sophistication of its own. Diamond jewellery is just the perfect way of expressing one’s refinement and taste for superior adornments.
Many a times, it becomes difficult to express one’s emotions in words, so diamond jewellery is the best way to express it rather than say a thousand words. Earlier, diamond jewellery was considered the perfect way to flaunt one’s status and reputation in society. However, diamond jewellery has become very popular with the common crowd rather than remaining just the monopoly of the rich and the famous.
Diamond rings are popular jewellery and reflect the trend and style of the present times. Diamond rings are a perfect gift and perhaps the best way of expressing eternal love for your partner. Since a ring has no beginning or end, a diamond ring is considered to be the most lasting and durable symbol of commitment. Exquisite diamond rings can however, cost a lot. In fact, they are very popular gifts for weddings and engagements. Diamond rings make people feel very special because they know how much they cost in the markets these days.
Traditional diamond rings such as Trellis, Solitaire, 3 stone, 4 stone, and 7 stone rings are extremely popular with people these days. Besides this, diamond necklaces and diamond bands are much sought after by people and are cherished as vaunted gift items for a variety of joyous occasions such as engagements, weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries.
Diamond earrings are also an enchanting possession and vaunted gift, especially adorned by ladies. Nowadays, even men wear diamond earrings, mostly only in one ear. Also, men's diamond earrings are simpler than women's diamond earrings, which are more usually an ornate work of art.
Two types of diamond earrings are most popular – the hanging earrings and the studs. Both these varieties exude exuberance and elegance, and look chic on any wearer. Many people now wear diamond earrings as a regular fashion accessory and even put them on to places of work and elsewhere.
Diamond earrings are usually set in gold or platinum in combination with other diamonds or gems such as ruby, emerald, topaz, and sapphire. Again, diamond earrings are priced according to the size, weight, and the quality of the diamonds used. The cut, clarity, and colour of the diamonds also signify the price and quality of the diamond earrings.
Many varieties of diamond earrings are available in the market today. However, be cautioned to purchase only genuine diamond earrings. Also, always decide on a budget before you go out to purchase diamond earrings, as diamonds can be expensive. Moreover, do the necessary amount of research before purchasing diamond earrings, as choosing diamond earrings without the necessary research can become very difficult.

Types of opal
Types of Australian Solid Opal Australian opal is classified into five main types: black opal, light opal, crystal opal, boulder opal and common opal.
Black opal is opal with gem colour on a natural dark base. The dark base colour shows up the gem colours more brilliantly than in any other kind of opal. When the base colour is dark grey rather than black, the opal may be referred to as 'semi-black' or 'grey'. Black opal is the most rare and valuable opal type. Nearly all of the world's supply of black opal is mined at Lightning Ridge in New South Wales.
Light opal contains gem colours sparkling from a white or pale-coloured body. Light opal is mined mainly at Coober Pedy, Mintabie and Andamooka in South Australia and at White Cliffs in New South Wales; some light opal is found at Lightning Ridge.
Crystal opal contains gem colours in a transparent or semi-transparent body. Crystal opal can be extremely beautiful, and is often used to make opal doublets or inlay jewellery. It is mined mainly at Andamooka in South Australia and at Lightning Ridge in New South Wales.
Boulder opal is gem-coloured opal found within a body of ironstone or iron-laden sandstone. It is named for the boulder-shaped lumps of ironstone in which it is often found. The dark-coloured stone gives some boulder opal a brilliance similar to that seen in black opal - but the gem colour usually occurs in thin, wavy sheets, so boulder opal is often cut with rock matrix showing in the face.
Common opal is opal that does not contain gem colours. Common opal has the same chemical composition as gem opal; but whereas gem opal contains microscopic spheres arranged in a regular array, in common opal the arrangement of spheres is irregular. The best-known kind of common opal is potch, which may be black, grey, white or amber-coloured. A natural backing or body of black potch is a defining characteristic of black opal (see 'Black opal' above).

Storage of Platinum Jewelry
Platinum, though a strong metal, can still be scratched by other items in your jewelry box. As such, your platinum jewelry should be kept away from other jewelry with gemstones, especially diamonds. Over time, platinum jewelry kept with other hard items will gather small scratches and dents in the surface that affect the luster and wear off the high shine polish of the metal.
Store your platinum properly in individual soft chamois bags, or in their own space in a suede or soft fabric-lined jewelry box. This will keep the metal shiny and lustrous for years to come. platinum-and-rose-gold-wedding-ring
Cleaning Platinum Jewelry
Platinum jewelry can be cleaned with the same jewelry cleaners used for gold. Or, simply mix a mild soap and water solution, and allow the platinum jewelry to soak in the solution for ten minutes. Then, rinse off the solution thoroughly with warm water (not over a sink, or with the drain completely plugged) and polish gently with a soft cloth. Platinum can be cleaned once per week for items that are worn frequently. Remember to always remove your platinum jewelry before doing housework or cleaning in order to keep the metal looking newer, longer.

How to Care for Gemstone Jewelry
A brand new gemstone has a smooth polish, beautiful color, and a brilliant sparkle. But if you plan on wearing your beloved new piece of gemstone jewelry to death, it’s important to properly care for it to extend its life and beauty. Here are some of the most important tips to keep in mind when caring for gemstone jewelry:
When To Take It Off
Our favorite jewelry pieces are often the ones that have the shortest lives due to constant wear. Though it’s tempting to wear your pretty gemstone jewelry everywhere, avoiding these conditions will vastly prolong their life:
The Beach: Sweat, sunscreen and sand are a bad combination of elements for a gemstone. Porous stones like opal, pearls and turquoise can become permanently discolored from excess oils or sweat, and the abrasive texture of sand can wreak havoc on the smooth polish of many gemstones.
Chores: Housework, washing dishes and doing the laundry exposes your gemstones to a number of harsh chemicals that can alter their beauty.
Swimming: The chemicals that purify pool water are just as bad for your gemstone jewelry as household cleaners.
Getting Ready: Perfume, hairspray, lotion and even shampoo and conditioner have the potential to ruin gemstones over time. Make a habit of putting your jewelry on after you are completely ready, and you’ll never have to worry.
Working Out: Jewelry has little place in a gym anyway, but it’s worth mentioning that the sweat, grime and potential for impact during a workout is bad for gemstones, especially the softer ones.
When To Clean It
If you follow the guidelines above, hopefully your gemstone jewelry will stay fairly clean on its own. Gemstones should not be cleaned on a daily basis, as overcleaning can eventually dull the polish on softer gems. After a long period of constant wear, however, you should still clean your gemstones to keep them looking shiny and new. Here’s how to do it right:
Avoid Using Toothbrushes: Most gemstones are delicate; not nearly as hard or durable as a diamond. Diamonds, rubies and sapphires are the hardest gemstones, but even they should be treated gently during cleaning. Avoid using a toothbrush to scrub a gemstone, since the bristles can abrade the gem’s surface with tiny scratches. Over time this will cause them to lose their luster and sparkle.
Avoid Soaking Porous Stones: Pearls, opal and turquoise should not be soaked in water since these gemstones are porous and will soak up the water they are placed in. To clean porous stones, gently wipe them with a damp, clean cloth.

How to buy Cheap, Quality Diamonds Online
- Check out Blue Nile's website. They specialize in diamonds, but also sell different precious gems and gold and silver jewelry.
- Click on the option that says "Search for Diamonds." Use the search tools to filter through thousands of high quality diamonds by cut, clarity, color, carat weight, and price. Unlike many normal jewelers, Blue Nile does not even carry diamonds lower than SI2 clarity, because they don't want to sell diamonds that won't look nice.
- Check the diamond's offical gemologist certificate. Another huge advantage of shopping online at Blue Nile is that you can view official gemologists certificates for stones right on the site. A normal jeweler will likely avoid showing you certificates and try to schmooze you into paying to much for a low quality stone. Blue Nile does not hide anything about their diamonds.
- Attach the diamond to a ring setting if you like. After picking out a diamond you can add it to a setting or just proceed to checkout and buy the loose diamond.

May Birthstone – Emerald
Cleopatra wore lavish embellishments of emerald, this precious stone being her favorite jewelry. These breath-taking crystals were mined by the ancient Egyptians under the extreme conditions of desert heat, snakes and scorpions. The mines were claimed by Cleopatra as her own, during her reign, as she took extreme fascination to the green gems. It was noted how Cleopatra often gifted her visitors with this May birthstone, carved in her image.
A large emerald is usually very expensive as it is very rare. Growing within metamorphic rocks, the slow development and the growth in size is often restricted by the rock. Hence, finding a big stone is a very special condition increasing the emerald’s value. Care must be observed to protect it from hard blows because it is possible to get broken, due to the inclusions within.
It is often believed that an Emerald jewelry can bring wisdom, patience and growth to its wearer. May birthstone jewelry is best presented as a gift by a lover who would want to incorporate all of the mentioned virtues in the present relationship. After all, who does not wish for love to be strong and to endure all things.
