Katie Holmes' Engagement Ring-Celebrities Ring

Friday, February 27, 2009

The ring is a five carat oval-shaped diamond set in platinum and rose gold with an intricate pave setting. The ring’s band has a split-shank, meaning that the band itself splits as it rises toward the setting. This is a common feature with thin bands and large settings, because it provides greater stability to support the center and accent stones.

Famous Emeralds

Caravel Pendant: The Hermitage Museum in Russia is home to one of the finest specimens of carved emeralds ever created. The Spanish pendant, which dates back to the late 16th century, is in the shape of a caravel and is made entirely of emeralds and gold.

Patricia Emerald: The 632 carat Patricia Emerald is considered to be one of the greatest emeralds ever discovered. The stone, which was found in the Chivor Mines, is named after the daughter of the mine owner. What makes this emerald exceptional is that while most uncut emeralds have six sides, the Patricia Emerald is twelve sided or dihexagonal.

Unnamed Carved Emerald: On display in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is an unnamed cabochon, a beautiful specimen of the gemstone. The emerald, which was found as a rough stone in Colombia, is carved in the shape of a woman's head, with the pyrite, or fool's gold, crystals that occurred naturally within the emerald forming the woman's hair and earring.

Pearl Carpet of Baroda-Expensive Carpet

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Sotheby’s is delighted to announce that it is to sell the Pearl Carpet of Baroda, one of the most extraordinary masterpieces of its kind ever to come on the market. The carpet will form the centrepiece of Sotheby’s inaugural series of sales in Doha and be sold alongside other objects in the Arts of the Islamic World auction on 19 March 2009. The carpet is traditionally believed to have been created as a gift for the tomb of the Prophet Mohammad in Medina and was commissioned by “Gaekwar” Kande Rao, the Maharaja of Baroda. The intended gift was clearly never delivered as the Maharaja died before he made the donation and the carpet therefore remained in his family. Bidding on this will start around US$5 million but is expected to rise considerably higher.

Ruby - Birth Stone for July

Monday, February 16, 2009

The most costly gemstone - the Ruby, is one of the world's rarest stones and is the red variety of corundum (Aluminium oxide) with traces of chromium. Highly valued Ruby having a bluish tint is called pigeon-blood-red. Less costly ones have brownish or yellowish tint. The best quality ruby is obtained from Burma, while commercially important ones are from Indonesia.

Star Ruby Beliefs-July Birthstone

Star Ruby is said to pep up internal strength, ward off tensions, distress the mind and drive away stress related problems like migraine, insomnia, and hysteria. The healing powers of gemstones remain a controversial issue, but are mentioned since ages by healers, shamans and medicine men. Whether it's a fact or a placebo effect doesn't matter, if it helps.

Ruby is the birthstone for July, and the Capricorn zodiac sign। The top quality of ruby is Star Ruby. Ruby is also used to celebrate a couple's 15th and 40th anniversaries.

Flower Fancy Cut Diamond

Sunday, February 15, 2009

In the mid-1990s, De Beers began promoting a series of five fancy shapes। Commissioned by the diamond giant in an attempt to find a niche for unusual rough and off colors, the suite of stones, known as the Flower Cuts, was created by Gabi Tolkowsky in 1986. Each of the Flower Cuts - the Dahlia, Fire-Rose, Marigold, Sunflower and Zinnia - is based on unconventional cutting angles and dimensions. The cuts were designed to maximize the natural brilliance and color of diamonds, and create desirability for stones that might have otherwise been shunned. They are neither patented nor trademarked, as De Beers wanted to allow anyone in the world to cut and sell them.

Purple Diamonds

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Natural fancy coloured diamonds are very rare and expensive. Purple is one of the rarest and most desirable colours. The attempted Millennium Dome Diamond Robbery was an attempt to steal 12 large diamonds valued at a total of £200 million, an average of over £16 million each. Eleven out of the twelve diamonds were fancy coloured diamonds! Purple is one of the rarest and most desirable colours. A purple diamond recently assessed by the British Gemmological Institute has been estimated to be worth over £14 million, and to be the most valuable natural object in existence on a weight for weight basis. This stone weighs between four and five carats. There is a larger purple diamond on display at a Paris museum, but its colour is paler.

How Expensive?

Quality for quality, fancy purple diamonds are more expensive than ordinary near-colourless ones. The processing adds to the costs, so it is generally only worth treating diamonds of high clarity. The diamonds selected for treatment usually start off a one of the less desirable colours such as brown or yellow. There is no certainty about the final colour that any particular stone will be after treatment.

Engagement Ring Buying Tips

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Determine Your Budget The standard rule is two months salary – but – this is also a rule that the diamond industry created! However it's still a decent place to start, but then figure out your personal budget.
Pay Attention You're going to have to make a lot of choices – platinum or gold? Modern or traditional? Flashy or understated? It's easier if you've done your homework beforehand. Look at the jewelry your sweetheart wears on a daily basis – if it's all silver with intricate designs – look for a platinum engagement ring with intricate designs (often called filigree). If it's just a few heavy gold pieces, well, then go in that direction.

Choose a Stone While jewelers will sell you a preset ring, you can often get a better deal if you choose the diamond separately. It helps if you know what shape your sweetheart wants – round, pear, marquis, etc. The most classic shape is a round solitaire. More homework – read The Four Cs of Diamond Buying. You'll thank me later. Another money saving tip – look for a diamond with high color and cut, but with slightly lower clarity.
Choose the Setting After you've got your stone, then comes the setting. You could go for simple with a solitaire setting, or you could add filigree, extra side stones, and other details. You can choose gold, white or rose gold, platinum, or even titanium.

Maximize Your Budget Ask for stones that are slightly less than the next carat (0.8 instead of 1 or 1.9 instead of 2) – the almost indiscernible difference can add up to big savings. Instead of a diamond solitaire engagement ring, consider a less expensive center gemstone (such as tourmaline, blue topaz, sapphire) flanked by two small diamonds. Choose white gold instead of platinum. And consider an antique engagement ring.

Get a Buddy Don't go into a jewelry store alone. They're scary places full of way too many choices. If you can, bring your sweetheart's best friend or mom along to help you choose. But if you're worried they'll spill the beans, bring a trusted buddy of yours. Make sure they have taste, or you'll be trying to propose with a ringpop. Also, assuming they like the person you're buying it for, this is a great moment to bond with your parents and get their advice.
Think About Bringing Your Sweetheart With You You'll lose the element of surprise, but you'll be sure that she likes her engagement ring. More and more couples are doing it this way.

Get a Quality Jeweler Ask for recommendations from friends and family. My advice is to stick to the mom and pop jewelers and try to avoid the national chains – they often sacrifice quality for mass marketing. But make sure the store is accredited by the Jewelers of America or is a member of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Before you buy, find out what the return policy is so that you can exchange it if you didn't do your homework properly.

Plan Ahead You may not be able to just walk out of a jewelry store with a ring. Not only will you need to save up for it, but depending on what you order it could take a couple weeks for them to set the stone, do any engraving, or even custom design your ring (like Brad Pitt did for Jennifer Aniston). So if you want to propose on a certain date, make sure you start working on the ring early.
Get it In Writing Would you buy a house without an inspection? No? Well then don't buy a diamond without an independent diamond-grading report from the GIA or the American Gem Society. It should include the 4 c's of color, cut, clarity and carat, as well as the shape and size. And, like your house, don't forget to get the ring insured.
