Friday, January 30, 2009

Halle Berry's pregnant with his child, Halle Berry’s not ready to marry her boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry — but she was ready to accept a wedding ring from him. Halle is pregnant with her first child, and to celebrate the upcoming birth of their baby, Gabriel, 32, bought her a Cartier paved diamond eternity platinum band ring in early January. “It’s gorgeous,” an insider says of the $10,000 bauble. “The diamonds aren’t huge but they are perfectly cut and sparkle.” The insider adds that even though they’re not legally wed, Halle and Gabriel consider themselves married in every other way. “Gabriel gave Halle the ring to symbolize their commitment.” According to Halle, 41, every time she looks at Gabriel now, she thinks, “That’s my baby’s daddy.” Halle was seen showing off her new bling at a Cartier event in LA on January 5.

Men's Platinum Wedding Rings

Why are Platinum Wedding Rings a Good Choice for Men?

Strength
Most men do some kind of work with their hands from time to time.

With the amount of possible wear and tear on a ring, it’s sensible that platinum is the preferred metal for men’s wedding rings. The reason is that platinum is a strong a durable metal.

About 1.7 times as dense as 24 karat gold, platinum will stand up to wear and tear better than other jewelry materials. Platinum does scratch, but when it is scratched the metal is only displaced rather than lost completely, as is the case with gold.

The Attractive Appearance of Platinum

The bright white color of platinum makes it an attractive metal for men’s wedding rings. Platinum is unique to other metals because of its unmistakable white sheen.
Platinum is also a good base for any type of embellishment that you might want on your wedding ring. Diamonds, gemstones and other metals look exquisite on a platinum wedding ring.

Quality

The most expensive wedding rings for men are platinum wedding rings. Why? Because jewelers and a large portion of the general public deem platinum to be the best metal for jewelry. It’s the strongest metal you can use for a wedding ring and jewelers like to work with it. Also, being the most expensive type of material for men’s wedding rings, platinum gives a certain prestige to the men who wear it. You don't have to overpay though - if you shop around in stores or online you can often find an inexpensive platinum wedding ring.

Jewelry Making Tools

Six Most Useful Jewelry Making Tools

1. Chain nose pliers
These are used to do flat crimping, their tapered jaws allow access to narrow spots. Also useful to hold the jewelry piece when doing wire-turning. They must NOT contain teeth.

2. Round nose pliers
These are used to make wire loops. The size of the loops depends on the position along the tapered jaws when turning the wire. Your loops will not work out if you try and make do with just chain nose pliers - I did that when I first started and learnt the hard way.

3. Flush cutter
Sometimes called nippers, these cutters allow you to cut thin wire or thread as close as possible. Electricians use this tool so check electrical supply stores if you are not near a craft or jewelry making shop. To save money for the first little while, you can substitute with a toenail clipper which does the same thing for most situations but it's curved cutting edges are trickier to manage. You'll not regret buying a flush cutter. Do not use this cutter on memory wire - just use regular wire cutters instead.

4, Crimping Pliers
These are alternatives to making flat crimps with chain nose pliers. This is a two-step operation These pliers first apply the crimp tube to the beading wires and then reform it into a rounded tube again. Just to be sure, reposition the pliers again and redo the reforming step a second time, or if you're paranoid like me, a third time.

5. Nylon Jaw Pliers
No one is perfect. Wire doesn't always bend to your will. Straighten it again by gripping one end of the wire and stroking the rest of it a few times between the soft jaws of these pliers. A real wire saver when you are working with more expensive metals like sterling silver and gold.

6. Split Ring Pliers
Split rings (looks like key rings except way smaller) are much more secure than just a plain jump ring which can accidentally open. However, trying to open split rings ruins your nails and could expose your children to cuss words they shouldn't hear. These pliers do a wonderful job of keeping the beginning of a split ring open whilst you slide something on it. Just apply the hook end in between the double ring to start.

Diamonds – How To Know If A Diamond Is Fake Or Real

Friday, January 23, 2009

The first method is to check the diamond with the help of diamond tester as it will help you to differentiate between real diamond and best fake diamond. It is an electronic tester that can check all the diamonds except the moissanite stone for which the diamond tester is not reliable. The best fake diamond is the cubic zirconia and the weight of this diamond is around 50% more than a real diamond of the same size and shape. This weighing test also can find out the difference between fake vs. real diamond.

Another method for checking the best fake diamond is the transparency test in which the diamond is placed up side down on the news paper and if the written matter from the newspaper is legible then be sure that the diamond is not the real one and it can be a best fake diamond. One of the disadvantages of this method is that some of the stones may appear to be a real diamond due its fine cutting. In this case, one needs to be sure about the cutting methods of the stones. This method is very common and enables you to find the real diamond from the best fake diamond.

The third method that helps you to differentiate between fake vs. real diamond is the fog test. Hold the stone or the diamond and blow some air from your mouth on to the stone, if the fog appears on the stone and stays there for next few seconds then it shows that the stone is a best fake diamond because in case of a real diamond, the heat disappears instantly. The oily layers and dirt on the stone might create some problems to differentiate fake vs. real diamond. Thus, before carrying out a test for best fake diamond, clean its surface properly.

How To Buy An Engagement Ring

It is traditional for the groom to present the bride-to-be with an engagement ring.

Engagement rings are commonly diamond rings, with $5 billion of the $30 billion diamond jewelry market in the U.S. being spent on engagement rings. While a diamond is the preferred precious stone, being the most expensive and therefore the most precious, diamonds are not the only gems used in engagement rings.

To the untrained eye, all high-quality diamonds look equally beautiful. Most people base their evaluation of a diamond on its size, shape, and price. A lower price is not necessarily a bargain, as it may mean a smaller gem or lower gem quality.

Antique Engagement Rings

An "antique" engagement ring specifically refers to one over 50 years old. An estate ring is anything less than 50 years old, and may refer to a used ring bought only last year. For the most unique and charming rings, ask to see rings made before 1950. Some jewelers also use the term "vintage engagement ring" which different jewelers mean to use different things. While most use it as a catch-all term meaning "an old ring", others use it to mean a ring that was made to look like it was from another era; for example, a ring made in 1940 that has the filigree look of the Edwardian era.

Typical Styles of Different Eras
Victorian Antique Engagement Rings (1835-1900)
Edwardian Engagement Rings (1900-1920)
Art Deco Engagement Rings(1920-1930)

Opal Properties - All about Opal

Opal is a very beautiful gemstone, used as a lucky charm in some countries, and is an amorphous form of hydrous silica. It was considered as unlucky because of its fragility and tendency to break and scratch easily. Because of the high percentage of water content, it may be damaged by the heat and cold. These gemstones are found in different hues and colors such as black, red yellow and white, and are considered the queen of gemstones. Several varieties of this gemstone are available and each variety is attractive in it own way. The different types include harlequin, common, fire, water, wood and precious. Finest and the most expensive types can be found in Australia where recently, several new deposits have been discovered. Although most of the world's production comes from Australia, the fire variety in particular, are found in Mexico. Other countries such as Honduras, Mexico, former Czechoslovakia and Brazil produce minor amounts of this gemstone. Typically, the stones are found in sandstone or clay stone units.

The harlequin variety provides rich prismatic colors flashing from minute fissures. It is available in many shades such as blue, yellow and red specks and is lucid. The common form of the stone is of dull white or milky blue in color which produces same effect of harlequin type but to limited level because of its opacity. The color of fire opal ranges from hyacinth-red to honey yellow, and shows reflections of intense orange and red fire.

Titanium Rings Care & Maintenance

Monday, January 12, 2009

Ring Care
Titanium, like all jewelry metals, will acquire surface scratches or scuffs through everyday wear. Scratches will be particularly evident in new ring, but as the ring is worn it develop a natural, even satin patina over the entire surface. This occurs in platinum and gold rings as well.
Protect your ring by removing it during activities that may subject it to abrasion or hard knocks. We recommend that you not wear any type of ring at the gym, when gardening, playing sports, or at the beach.

Safety
For your safety, never wear any type of ring around open machinery or electrical equipment, or while participating in physical sports and activities.

High Polished Rings
Minor scratches in polished titanium or precious metals can be removed with a cream metal polish. We recommend using Flitz cream metal polish applied with a soft towel. Use liquid dish soap to remove the polish residue.

Buying Quality Platinum & Titanium Jewelry

Platinum and titanium jewelry are among the most expensive jewelry items, in part because they are crafted of white metals. Platinum jewelry is often very heavy and dense as is most titanium jewelry. Platinum jewelry is much heavier than gold jewelry because of the density of the metal used to craft it. Titanium is actually really light. It's only 60% heavier than aluminum and 45% lighter than steel! Platinum jewelry and titanium jewelry are also naturally white or silver, thus do not have to be combined with other metals to achieve a brilliant whitish sheen.

Most platinum jewelry is 90% pure or more, thus platinum jewelry is an exceptional selection for consumers who are allergic or who have sensitive skin. Gold jewelry might cause allergic reactions in people in part because it is mixed with other substances such as nickel, which can be irritating for some people.

Platinum and titanium jewelry usually will hold up well over time and require little maintenance, other than regular cleanings using a mild soap or cleaning agent. Titanium jewelry is in fact considered one of the most durable jewelry selections available, showing few if any signs of wear and tear over the years.

Advantages of Titanium Jewelry

This metal is becoming one of the most popular forms of jewelry that is being used today. This is partially due to the fact that it has become easier in recent years to form this jewelry into the shapes that is necessary in order for it to be worn. It is also the case that the jewelry has become easier with modern methods to carve and form intricate designs. It's interesting to note that it is the fastest-growing type of metal that is being used to make wedding bands and engagement rings. Another reason why it is so popular as jewelry is because it is noncorrosive, which allows it to be worn in a number of different environments, including swimming pools. One more of the advantages of titanium jewelry is that it can be worn by people who are allergic to other precious metals that are used in jewelry making.

Titanium is one of the more interesting things to come our way in a number of years. Because of it's diversity, more and more people are finding it in the various items that they use on a daily basis. You would probably be surprised at the number of different ways that you use it as well.

Platinum Jewelry Properties, Facts

Saturday, January 10, 2009

Platinum is a rare precious metal that's used to create fine jewelry. Its heavy weight and durability make platinum a metal that will not wear away with constant use. Platinum holds fine gemstones firmly in place for the life of the jewelry when used as prongs and other setting components.

Platinum's natural white luster provides a rich backdrop for diamonds, but it's a metal that's just as elegant when used all by itself to create a piece of jewelry, either a simple polished item or a design with engraved motifs. Platinum looks stunning when combined with contrasting touches of 18K yellow gold.

The Platinum Group of Metals

Six related metals belong to the Platinum Group of Metals, or PGM:

Peridot: The poor man’s emerald-August Birthstone

Peridot is usually pronounced as pair-uh-doe and it’s an array of olivine (not a certified mineral) that is consisted of two minerals known as fayalite and forsterite. Fayalite (Fe2Si04) is iron rich while forsterite (Mg2Sio4) is a manganese rich mineral.
A large number of gemstones that have a mineral origin form in the crust of the earth. But peridot and diamond are two such elements as form deeper in the earth and this deeper region is known as mantle. Peridot crystals are found 20 to 55 miles deeper and they pop up on the surface due to tectonic or volcanic activity. Similarly, diamonds form around 100-150 miles below the surface where temperatures and pressures are extreme.

There are only few gemstones that come in one color and Peridot is one of them. The deep effects of green color depend on iron composition in crystal formation and it also fluctuates from yellow-green to olive and brownish-green. Peridot is also called poor man’s emerald. No doubt, olivine is abundantly found mineral but still gemy peridot is rare in fact.

How Pure Is Your Gold Jewelry?

Chances are the ring on your finger is marked 18K, 14K, or 10K, with the K standing for karat, the system used to describe the percentage of pure gold an item contains. The higher the karat number, the higher the percentage of gold in your gold jewelry.

  • 24K gold is pure gold.

  • 18K gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 75% gold.

  • 14K gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 58.3% gold.

  • 12K gold contains 12 parts gold and 12 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 50% gold.

  • 10K gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 41.7% gold. 10K gold is the minimum karat that can be called "gold" in the United States.

Promise Ring Meaning

Monday, January 5, 2009

A promise ring is a ring given as an outward and physical expression, or symbol, of a promise made between two people. Traditionally, the promise ring is given for virtually any type of promise made between two people - either romantic or platonic. Popular reasons to give promise rings include:
  • Pre-engagement: If you're sure she's the right one for you, but not quite ready for engagement, the pre-engagement ring expresses commitment to the relationship and a promise for the future together.

  • Friendship: Good friends have always made pacts, sealing them with the exchange of friendship rings and other small tokens. Whether your friend is moving halfway across the country or lives right next door, you both know you will always be there for each other.

Amethyst Care & Maintenance - February Birthstone

Everyday caution

Remove gemstone jewelry when you're going to be doing work or exercise, or when you're doing dishes and housework. Avoid exposing your amethyst to household cleaners; particularly bleach which can seriously damage the stone.

Storing amethyst jewelry

Amethyst is susceptible to heat and sunlight, both of which will lighten the color and may even make it a muddy brown. Because of this, you should avoid leaving amethyst in direct sunlight for any length of time, and any jewelry repairs that use heat should be done with the stone removed from the setting. Keep amethyst jewelry wrapped in its own cloth to avoid damage.

Cleaning amethyst jewelry

You can clean your amethyst jewelry with a soft bristle brush and warm water, but avoid harsh chemicals which may damage the stone. Ultrasonic cleaners should not be used to clean amethyst jewelry as they may damage the gem.

Amethyst- Facts About Amethyst, Properties - February Birthstone

Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February and the traditional anniversary gemstone for the sixth of marriage. Once considered more valuable than diamonds, this member of the quartz member occurs naturally as crystals within rocks. The stones are mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Zambia, Australia and in the mountains of Russia

Amethyst can lighten if exposed to strong sunlight for a long time. When heated to 550-560 Centigrade, the color changes to dark yellow or reddish brown. (They are then called citrines. These are more richly colored and more expensive then natural citrines)

Ideally deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes, amethysts generally range in hue from pale lilac to nearly black purple. Since purple has always been the color of royalty, amethysts abound in the ornaments of in the British Crown Jewels and in the adornments of the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, as well. They have been found in ruins dating as far back as the ninth century, adorning royal jewelry, scepters, and crowns.

The intense violet hue of February's birthstone appealed to early monarchs, perhaps because they often wore this color…as a symbol of their elevated position. Purple dye was once scarce and expensive, so it was reserved for the garments of royalty, and the color came to symbolize power and status.

Facts About Garnets-January Birthstone

Garnet
Aren't garnets those wonderful deep-red gemstones you often find in antique jewellery? Well yes, to a certain extent, a deep, warm red indeed being the colour most frequently found in garnets. Sadly, however, far too few people are aware that the world of the garnets is far more colourful than that. Spectacular finds, especially in Africa, have enhanced the traditional image of the garnet with a surprising number of hues - even if red does continue to be its principal colour. Thanks to their rich colour spectrum, garnets today can quite happily keep pace with changes of style and the colour trends of fashion. And thanks to the new finds, there is a reliable supply of them too. So in fact this gemstone group in particular is one which gives new impetus to the world of jewellery today.

By the term 'garnet', the specialist understands a group of more than ten different gemstones of similar chemical composition. It is true to say that red is the colour most often encountered, but the garnet also exists in various shades of green, a tender to intense yellow, a fiery orange and some fine earth-coloured nuances. The only colour it cannot offer is blue. Garnets are much sought-after and much worked gemstones - the more so because today it is not only the classical gemstone colours red and green which are so highly esteemed, but also the fine hues in between. Furthermore, the world of the garnets is also rich in rarities such as star garnets and stones whose colour changes depending on whether they are seen in daylight or artificial light.

This thesis with the Garnet is not new. Noah used garnet as a lamp on the bow of his ship as he traveled across a flooded earth. An act that became symptomatic of the end of something old and a pledge of a fresh existence, a new terrain, and a new foundation. Another strong correlation to Noah is the fact that Garnet gemstones can come in just about any color and each color is tied to a different geological region.

However, the garnet first began its voyage into the world of jewelry in 3100 B.C. when Egyptian artists would use the gemstones and handcraft jewelry. As a result, garnet pendants have become superb pieces of jewelry to give as a birthday gift.

All About Cocktail Rings

Sunday, January 4, 2009

The cocktail ring is an important eye-popping statement to make with your cocktail attire. Whether you're wearing a colorful whimsical dress or a basic black number, adding a cocktail ring adds a splash of drama and glamour to your ensemble. With so many rings to choose from, ranging from the bold and the beautiful, to bling-worthy conversation starters, knowing what to look for in your favorite evening babble is key.
They are Classic and Timeless
The cocktail ring has been around for centuries. And, one thing has stayed true - the unforgettable large size of the ring. However, styles, colors, stones, gold, white gold or platinum are all used to make your favorite cocktail ring truly unique and something that fits in your lifestyle, price range and wardrobe.
Make Any Outfit
Getting ready for a cocktail party is simpler than it looks. You just need a few bold pieces and a cocktail ring is the perfect accessory to make an outfit feel new and fresh, not to mention glamorous.

The Styles
It's amazing the amount of styles available these days in the world of fashionable bold rings. When searching for the perfect ring, choose one that you feel comfortable with. If you're not used to wearing bold, eccentric jewelry, opt for a smaller cocktail ring. If you love bold conversation starters and feel comfortable with a large flashier ring to dress up your finger, go for that.

January Birthstone-Garnet

As one of few ancient gemstones existing today, Garnets have found their exclusive place under the sun. Its earliest use as adornment could be traced back to around 3,000 B.C., as evidenced by remnants of garnet jewelry found in the Nile Delta. Ancient Egyptians have created bracelets, necklaces, and other body adornment made from this hard stone.

The Garnet is an exceptionally versatile gemstone. Though it is popular by a couple of varieties called the Almandine and Pyrope, whose rich hues runs from dark red to brownish red, it has many other color varieties that practically covers the entire spectrum, except for the color blue. The Garnet has dark and light hues, some with translucent properties and one that exudes a rainbow of color, including pink, red, purple, orange, yellow, violet, green, and albeit rarely black & brown.

Invest in Platinum: 2009?

At face value, it seems that now is the right time to invest in platinum when you consider the highs and lows of the past 52 weeks. Platinum reached an all-time high of just over $2,300 per ounce in March of 2008 and today tries to hold firm around $940 an ounce–a 60% drop from its primordial heights of 1st quarter 2008.

But a New Year is upon us and things are already beginning to change. With the news of the bloody conflict in the Gaza strip, precious metals prices got a jump-start during the last few days of 2008. Platinum was actually struggling in the mid-800s before the news of increased instability and the breach of the cease-fire in the Middle East.

Antique Diamond Engagement Ring

You have a choice to get the antique diamond engagement ring made of gold and/or platinum. Today many people also love silver, some like the silver to be oxidized as well as the diamonds (these would be small and set in rows of four or five). In this way, there are many choices to choose from. Your budget will dictate in the end what you should buy. However, if money is not a problem, then by all means go for an original antique diamond engagement ring which will cost much more than its actual value.

There is no need to be upset if you cannot afford the original antique diamond engagement ring. Most of the big name showrooms can copy whatever you show them in identical replicas. You may tell them the time frame you have in mind and the style you want copied. Then just lay back and enjoy it. This will also be expensive; however; it might be more affordable then the original and it can still totally floor your would-be wife.
