Special characteristics of platinum

Thursday, November 27, 2008

Platinum is a rare precious metal used to create fine jewelry. Durability and sturdiness make platinum a metal that is desirable for constant use. Platinum also has benefits of holding fine gemstones firmly in place and makes the jewelry long lasting. Platinum can be used with gold for bringing up a rich color variation and good with diamonds as its natural white luster provides a rich backdrop for diamonds. Platinum is just as elegant when made alone to create a piece of jewelry.

There are some myths about platinum that it is difficult to work with but the reality is that anyone with a little experience can learn to work in platinum, while it is true that working in platinum require extra time in the finishing process. Another misconception is that platinum jewelry must be plated with rhodium normally while platinum by itself is white enough so rhodium plating is not necessary.

Platinum jewelry is ideal for even the most sensitive skin since it is hypoallergenic. It is one of the most durable metals and is resistant to scratches on account of its density. It is one of the strongest and heaviest metals too. The sheer shine and brilliance of platinum makes it an ideal choice for a gift for someone you love. Platinum jewelry is usually alloyed with copper, titanium, palladium and iridium. Platinum jewelry does not tarnish and is ideal for everyday wear. Precious stones are held firmly when embedded in platinum designs. Platinum prongs display minimal wear, which makes platinum an excellent setting for precious stones. The Hope Diamond, the Kohinoor and the Star of Africa, some of the world's famous diamonds are set in platinum. Being highly pliable, it is possible to create fine mesh accessories with platinum.

Platinum Jewelry - Buying Guide
Most platinum pieces are 95% pure - 950 parts per thousand. You can look for guaranteed quality marks such as 950 Plat, 950Pt, Pt950 or Plat. Some jewelry containing platinum and other group metals is marked with the platinum content and the content of the other metal - 600 Plat. 350 Irid or 600 Plat 350 Ir. Any jewelry that contains less than 50% pure platinum content cannot be marked as platinum. Platinum jewelry can be purchased from reputed jewelry stores and online shops too. Discerning buyers looking for sophisticated yet fashionable jewelry can opt for the subtle beauty and elegant understatement of platinum jewelry.

For women who are looking for classic designs that are understated yet timeless, there is no dearth of platinum jewelry items, be it rings and earrings or chains and bracelets. Platinum jewelry is preferred by modern women who are looking for wearable jewelry - something that complements their lifestyle, something that doesn't look flashy at the workplace or an evening out. You can choose from platinum ear studs or drops and hoops in platinum filigree. Necklaces and bracelets in platinum are strong and come in matte or polished textures. Platinum is teamed with yellow gold to create contrasting colored jewelry.

Care of Platinum Jewelry
You can wear platinum jewelry everyday but remember to take good care of it. Platinum rings or chains can be cleaned with a mild soap water solution and scrubbed with a soft bristle brush. Ensure that you store the platinum jewelry items in a fabric-lined box to prevent scratches. Regular cleaning of platinum jewelry will help protect its luster and shine. Over time platinum develops a natural patina. It may be advisable to get your platinum jewelry cleaned professionally every few years, if you want to maintain the glossy look.

Opal Care & Fact

Use a soft dry or damp cloth to clean your opal. In fact, rub the gem periodically using a cloth moistened with olive oil to help preserve it. Do not soak your opal in chemicals or use mechanical cleaners. Avoid heat and dry conditions that could dehydrate and crack your opal. Treat it with care to prevent sharp blows and scratches. Avoid impacts. Opal is brittle, heat sensitive, and breaks and scratches easily. Some varieties self- destruct through the loss of water. Even with these drawbacks, opal still is a premier gemstone

Opal's name evolved from the Roman word opalus from the Greek word opallios - "to see a change of color." The Greek word was a modification of the ancient Indian Sanskrit name for opal, upala, which meant "precious stone." If one spoke in mixed tongues, then opal would be opallios upala, "to see a change of color precious stone. "Opals are the gem world's silvery mirrors, reflecting back every color in a flash of pastels or a streak of fire.

The value of opal lies to a degree in the size of the stone but mostly in the colors it displays. Some people are not big fans of opals, because they are familiar with opals seen only in the discount jewelry stores which look like globs of frozen milk. Those stones show almost no color beside white. Opal is a non-crystalline gem that is formed in the ground when silica is liquefied and washed into fissures in the surrounding rock where it solidifies into a hardened gel. Tiny silica spheres create a pattern in opal that causes a prism-like effect that produces flashes of color.

Natural opal occurs in several types: White opal--the most common on the market--has a transparent or white body color with vibrant pastel flashes of rainbow color. Black opal has a blue, gray or black body color that reveals a more dramatic play of color. Boulder opal is most often black opal with some of the ironstone matrix in which it occurred still intact. Crystal or water opal is transparent, colorless opal that contains brilliant flashes of color swimming within it. Fire opal is transparent or translucent opal with a yellow to orange to red body color that may have a play of color or not.

In determining value, the brilliance and pattern of the play of color on an opal are very important. Generally speaking, opal with an abundance of red fire is the most highly prized. Those strong in blue and green are equally beautiful but not as rare, so they're priced less. Opal is not a common gem, although non-precious varieties abound. White opal, the most prevalent, may sell for a few dollars to several hundred per carat. On the other hand, fine black opal, which is the loveliest and rarest, therefore most expensive of the opal varieties, can command more than $1,000 per carat. The value of opal also lies in the size of the gem. Opal is very rare in large sizes, especially in black opal. Most opal is not faceted (except fire opal). It is usually cut into rounded or freeform cabochons that enhance color play.

Garnet Tips, Care & Fact-January Birthstone

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

To clean garnet, use warm soapy water and a soft brush. An ultrasonic cleaner is safe for most garnets, except andradite (demantoid). Do not steam clean garnet.

Its name comes from the Latin "Granatus," which means "seed-like" or "like a grain". Many garnet crystals have the shape and color of pomegranate seeds. This hard, durable and often very brilliant gem offers great versatility because of its variety. Believed to represent faith, loyalty, truth and devotion, garnet is known as the stone of commitment.

Most people think of garnet as a single type of gem that is dark red in color. Actually, garnet is a gem family that spans a range of red, green, yellow, orange, purple and brown shades. Faceted garnets can display brilliant, rich, lustrous colors that look good in sunlight and artificial light. Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any mineral, occurring in every color except blue.
Color is most important when determining the value of garnet. Lively, bright colors usually command higher prices than gems that are too light or dark. But remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and color preferences are subjective. Of course, clarity, cut and carat weight also factor into the cost of a gem. Better quality garnets are usually eye clean and very high clarity (not many inclusions) under magnification.

The most rare and valuable of the garnet species are tsavorite (green grossular) and demantoid (green andradite). Tsavorite--in a lively, strong, bright green color--can command several hundreds of dollars per cart depending on quality and size.

Topaz Jewelry Cleaning Tips & Fact-November Birthstone

The best way to care for topaz is to clean it with warm, soapy water. Avoid exposure to heat, acids and rapid temperature changes. Strong heat may alter or destroy color. Never clean topaz ultrasonically and steaming is not safe.

There is some uncertainty regarding the name. Some say it comes from the Sanskrit word meaning “fire.” Others link it to the Red Sea Island of Topazios (Zabargad or St. John’s Island), where peridot has been found. For the general public, topaz means a yellow gem, and much citrine and smoky quartz has been sold as “golden topaz” and “smoky topaz.” The terms “imperial” and “precious” topaz are often used to distinguish between true topaz and the quartz look-alikes.

The ancient Greeks believed that it had the power to increase strength and make its wearer invisible in times of emergency. Topaz was also said to change color in the presence of poisoned food or drink. It was said to cure insomnia, asthma, and hemorrhages.

Topaz Tips-Blue topaz buying guide-November Birthstone

Blue topaz
Naturally occurring blue topaz is rare, and when it does occur the color is generally pale. The blue topaz that is on the market today has been treated with radiation to deepen and set the blue tones. The process used gives very predictable results, making it possible to perfectly match the hue every time.

Blue topaz buying guide
Blue topaz comes in a range of colors. The most desired is a pure, clear robin's egg blue. When buying blue topaz, be sure to examine the stone under both natural and incandescent light. Because the stone is so light in color, inclusions show easily, but eye clean stones are not uncommon.

Be wary of unscrupulous dealers trying to pass the less expensive quartz off as blue topaz. If possible, have the stone appraised by an independent gemologist.

Blue topaz care
Like diamonds, topaz have perfect cleavage - meaning that a sharp blow from the right direction will cause the stone to split perfectly along the cleavage line. For this reason, it's important to protect blue topaz from situations where it may receive a sharp blow.

Emerald buying guide, Care, Cleaning & Storing Tips

Emerald buying guide
Look for deep, medium tone green when you're looking for an emerald. Emeralds vary in color from pale yellow-green to nearly black. The most valuable are pure, transparent grass green - the color that gives Ireland its nickname of the Emerald Isles.

Few emeralds are free of inclusions or faults, and emerald pricing accounts for that fact. In addition, nearly all emeralds sold as gemstones have been oil-finished or filled with resin to give the stone a smooth surface. If you're buying an emerald, assume that it has been treated in some way unless otherwise told. Untreated emeralds of high quality will fetch a premium price.

Emerald care
Because emeralds are seldom found without fissures and surface cracks, it's common for them to have been oiled, waxed or filled with resin. Because of the likelihood of those treatments, special care is called for when cleaning and handling emeralds.

Everyday cautions
Avoid situations where your emerald could knock against things and be damaged. In addition, remove your emerald rings when doing dishes or immersing your hands in water as soapy solutions and hot water can damage the finish on the stone. Finally, avoid sudden temperature changes which could cause color change and cracking in your emerald.

Cleaning your emerald jewelry
Use warm water with a very mild detergent and a soft brush to clean your emerald jewelry. Between washing, clean emerald jewelry with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner or steam cleaner on emerald jewelry, and avoid harsh chemicals. Every 2-5 years, have an experienced jeweler re-oil your emerald to keep it looking its best.

Storing your emerald jewelry
Store emeralds in velvet lined boxes with individual compartments or inside cotton bags in a jewelry box. Avoid storing them in the same compartments of bags as diamonds and sapphires to prevent scratches to the emeralds. Also avoid extreme temperature changes and prolonged exposure to bright light which can change the color of your emeralds.

Diamond-Judging the Quality of Diamonds

What to Look For
To begin judging the quality of diamonds you have to have an undrestanding of the 4 C's. These are cut, clarity, color and carats. Each one of these has an effect on the cost of the diamond and fine diamonds will do will in all four areas. If three are excellent and the forth is poor then the value of the stone plummets. The diamond shape doesn't necessarily add to the value of the diamond, but does help to add some variety.

Judging Color
The colors of diamonds are rated with an alphabet grading system that starts with “D” and ends with “Z”. Completely colorless diamonds fall in the “D” and “E” grade, while colored, fancy diamonds are at the other end of the alphabet, at “Y” and “Z”.

Judging Clarity
The clarity of a diamond refers to whether or not the diamond is clear all the way through, or whether it has tiny flaws and cloudy areas within the gemstone. It’s actually very rare to have a diamond with absolute perfect clarity and no flaws, but most diamond flaws are not visible to the naked eye. These flaws can only be seen with a magnifying device and only properly interpreted with suitable training.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) uses a magnification of about 10x when judging diamond quality based on the clarity.

Judging Carat Weight
Carat is the term we used to describe the weight of a diamond gemstone and it's a lessor factor in the cost of a diamond.. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams of weight. so 10 carats = 1 gram. A 10,000 carat diamond wouild be 1 kilogram in weight. The biggest diamond ever found was, in rough condition, about 40 grams (400 carats.)

Judging Cut
One of the most important factors in judging diamond quality is judging the cut of a diamond. It’s important because a quality cut diamond will be more brilliant and reflects light more beautifully. A nicely cut diamond will always be much more valuable than one that isn't so well cut, even if everything else is equal.

When judging diamond quality on the cut of a diamond, look at the stone in a well lit area. If the light seems to go into the stone and bounce back, showing a sparkling reflective surface, the diamond has a good cut.

Diamond Certificates

Diamond certificates from independent organizations such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) provide a diamond grading report, that gives you valuable information about the 4 C's that were taken into consideration when the diamond was priced. It's important that you use an outside source for diamond certificates, instead of the jeweler who is selling the diamond you are interested in, because the jeweler wants to make money on the sale of the diamonds, the certificates may be slightly biased and you could be paying more than the market value of the diamond.

Reasons to have Diamond Certificates
The GIA is more conservative when grading diamonds because they do not gain anything from diamond sales.

Pay the Right Price for your Diamond
Diamonds are valued according to their quality based on a grading system that makes use of the 4 C's. You should receive diamond certificates (also called grading reports) from independent companies rather than a jeweler, to insure that your getting an unbiased reporting of the value of the diamond. Otherwise, you could be paying much more for your diamond than what the diamond is actually worth. A diamond appraisal without a certificate might be meaningless.

Protecting Your Investment
Diamonds are not the same kind of investment as buying stocks and bonds, but having diamond certificates gives you a better investment than just having the diamond. Diamond certificates make it easier to sell a diamond in the future, because you have documentation of how much the diamond is worth and why it was valued that amount.

Increased Security during Cleanings and Repairs
Many people hesitate to bring their jewelry into the jeweler's when they're in need of repair services or cleaning. It makes people wonder how they'll know for sure that they've received the same diamond back that they brought in. It is an extremely rare occurrence for a jeweler to purposely switch diamonds, however it could happen unintentionally. Diamond certificates act as an additional security measure in this case.

Chocolate pearls

An extremely new and a different type of pearl have recently entered the market in the year 2000. It flourished with the name “chocolate pearls” because of their attractive and dark brown colors. They are well known for their purity and modesty. The chocolate pearls are found very rarely as compared to the other pearls. They are made by a proprietary beaching method. The unusual color in the chocolate pearls was the result of the irradiation treatment and in the process; no artificial color is added actually.

Although the chocolate pearls are dominated by the brown color, there are some secondary colors as well dominating it. It has little or no orientation, but the luster of the chocolate pearls ranges form medium to high. The nacre coloration is very even and a light coloration is seen near the nucleus interface.

The chocolate pearls are made by altering the melanin pigment of the natural pearl’s color with the help of proprietary technologies. They have an unusual bronze, copper or rust-brown color with very string and iridescent overtones. Dyes and coloring agents are not used in the making of chocolate pearls. The chocolate pearls are very expensive because they are found very rarely.

The dyed chocolate pearls can be categorized under the category of “treated pearls” that can be made available to you significantly at a lower price. The chocolate color obtains its impressive and astonishing brown colors through the bleaching process and the heat that is being applied to the fancy colored Tahitian pearls.

Japanese pearls-What are Japanese pearls?

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Many people are asking about the difference between the pearls that we are cultivating in our pearl farm and Japanese pearls, so we would like to spend some time to talk about Japanese pearls today.

Most of the Japanese freshwater pearls are cultivated in China these days because of their pollution problem. Both freshwater pearls and are Akoya pearls are loosely called by laymen as Japanese pearls in the world of fashion and pearl jewellery. However, Akoya means Marine water in Japanese language. Japanese Akoya pearls are well known for their thick nacre and amazing luster. They have classic quality and grace.

Japanese Akoya pearls are harvested from small oysters Pincada fucata ; it is a small oyster have average size 6 to 7 cm. Best time to harvest these Akoya pearls are the hottest and coldest time of year, in this time period oysters are dormant. Pearls harvested in some other time of year have thin nacre and dull luster.

Kokichi Mikimoto a visionary from Japan invented a technique for culturing Akoya pearls. He also patented technique of culturing pearls. These pearls were primarily cultivated in sea water off the coastal area of Japan. To form beautiful Akoya pearl, small bead of mantle tissue is inserted inside the oyster and then those oysters are left to grow in Sea water or fresh water. Oyster then secretes layers of thick nacre over that irritant which results into formation of high quality, lustrous pearl.

Natural color of pearl is completely dependent upon the specie and climatic conditions of water. In 3-5 years, pearl grows completely into nice quality pearl with thick nacre. Growth is constantly monitored during growth period to get good harvest. Bead inserted in Akoya oyster (Pinctada fucata martensii) is very small for formation of perfect Akoya pearl. Akoya oyster very rarely produces more than one pearl.

Pearl Tips-How to choose fine quality pearl jewelry

It is very important to determine difference between fine quality pearls and average pearls. Quality of pearls depends upon luster, thickness & quality of nacre, surface quality, color, shape and size.

Luster: Luster of pearl is the most important value-determining factor of pearls. Fine quality pearls has intense bright luster that illuminates from within. You can check the luster of pearls by examining it under fluorescent light. Never examine pearls against black background.

Color and overtone: There are two colors of pearls, body colors and overtones. White colored pearl with ‘rose’ overtone is most rare and desirable. Cream-colored pearls are not so expensive. Value of pearl depends upon intensity of color. Darker toned pearl are more expensive than lighter toned pearls. Common natural colors available are white, gray, black, blue, gold, pink and green. Always make sure that pearls you are buying are not artificially dyed, especially golden and black pearls are often dyed.

Surface of pearls: Always examine surface for any imperfection. Such imperfection of surface of pearl are called as surface blemishes. Finer quality pearls have very less surface blemishes. It is almost impossible to get pearl without any surface blemishes.

Shape: Next thing to consider while choosing pearls are shape of pearls. There are three significant shapes of pearls symmetrical, spherical and baroque pearls. Perfectly round pearl is rarest and most desirable. Teardrop or pear shaped pearls are symmetrical pearls. Symmetrical pearls are most commonly used for making jewelry. Baroque pearls are pearls without any shape. These pearls are least expensive but they are gaining popularity because of their natural look.

Size: Last but not the least, size of the pearl. Larger pearls are rarer and most expensive.

Pearl cross-Making a Pearl cross

There are a different variety of Arts and Crafts projects that people like you are highly interested in. these projects not only include paper and cloth activities, but it also includes beaded projects. Today, I am going to talk about how to make a pearl beaded cross.

Firstly, to make a pearl beaded cross, you should collect all the material that will be required to carry on the project. You will need about 100-110 beads or pearls that are ranging in size about 3mm or more than that and cut three fishing line about 0.25mm that is about 70-90cm each.

Now you can start with making your pearl cross. The first step in the process is to string five pearls and then cross the fishing line through one, pulling it tight. Then, string three more pearls and cross them from the middle pearl. Then string four pearls on the either side of the line i.e. on the right side as well as the left side, crossing each line back to the first pearl. Repeat the process in the same way for both the sides.

The next step is to cross the line back the second and the third pearl from the second step. Here, string four pearls and cross them back the first bead in this step. Cross the line back at the forth and the first pearl, from the second step. Then string and cross one pearl with both the lines. Here, at this point string three pearls from the middle pearl and repeat this process thrice. String five pearls and then tie. Make another piece similarly like this as you will need two pieces.

There are three categories of jade, type A jade which is of superior quality and type B and C grades. Type A grade jades are more in demand and the prices for them are higher too. To fulfill the customers demands the manufacturers use chemical bleach to remove the impurities from lower jades thus damaging the structure in the process. This jade then gets classified as B grade and C grade jades.
• Types A Jade – this is a natural, untreated jade which undergoes natural processes of plum juice washing and polishing with beewax. This procedure does not classify under artificially processed method as they is no high temperature or high pressure treatment used.
• Type B Jade – this is an artificially treated jade which is oxygenated and hydrolyzed with oxides like magnesium, iron and calcium which tend to change the color of the jade into brown, black, orange or grey. Strong acids are used for its treatment to remove the impurities and the original color of jade is not affected by powerful acid treatment. However this jade can discolor or become unstable as time passes.
• Type C Jade – this jade has been chemically treated to remove impurities and been dyed as well to improve the color. The color will look impressive but will not retain the quality with passage of time.

Jade Jewelry- Value & Beauty of Jade Jewelries

Jade is a symbol of love and virtue. In most Asian culture, it has become a status symbol where only the rich and the famous can wear one.

The more valuable jades are known as the Jadeite jade. It has a beautiful emerald green color with an elegant translucent appearance. Because of its rarity and beauty, Jadeite jade are also popularly called gem jades or imperial jade. Jadeite jades originate from Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). An event is held by Myanmar Gems Enterprise that holds a gem, pearl and jade trade every year in order to showcase and sell precious gems and stones to top dealers from across the globe.

Nephrite jade, which is carved in China, is the more affordable kind of jade. It is medium to dark green in color. It can also contain some black streaks. Nephrite jades have different characteristics than jadeite jade. It is less rare and is more durable that's why it's a popular material for carvings. Nephrite jades are very abundant in some parts of Canada and California.

If you are decided to experience the beauty of jade yourself, be sure to get a jade jewelry that's well worth your money. The colors and transparency of the jade you would choose should be uniform. Although some people may also find multi-colored jades very appealing. Prepare to shell out some real cash if you want to go for green jades, which are popular and can be a little pricey than other jades.

Translucent jades are more expensive than the opaque ones. If you happen to see a single cracks or some other flaws, then try not to buy that piece. Lastly, be aware of jade counterfeits. There may be nephrite jades that are sold for the price of jadeite jades because of some color treatments they've undergone to intensify its green color. You may even chance upon fake sellers of "jades" well in fact they are selling quartz dyed green.

Peridot-What is peridot? - August Birthstone

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Peridot, a variety of chrysolite, is a light to olive green, moderately hard, transparent mineral that is cut and graded as gemstones.

Peridot is the birthstone of August and signifies joy and happiness in marriage.

The word peridot, although said to be French, may get it's origins from the Arabic word faridat, meaning gem. Olivine is another word used by mineralogist because of it's olive color.

In ancient Egypt, this beauty of a gemstone was thought to protect the wearer from evil spirits and to keep spirits away during the night. It was also thought to cure asthma and and other illnesses and to ward off thirst caused by fever.

Peridot crystals tend to be two thick and tubular with cleavage and conchoidal fracture that run in two directions.

Peridot has been known to crack under pressure due to the brittle nature of it's crystals so care must be taken when jewelers cut the stone for jewelry placement.

Coral jewelry is simply beautiful

Coral jewelry is becoming increasingly popular among all age groups. The jewelry has always held a prominent place in ancient history because of the magical powers the gem possesses. The gem is believed to prevent sterility and is considered one of the most powerful gems. You can purchase affordable or very expensive coral jewelry. The price of the jewelry will depend largely on the quality, origin and the rarity of the gem.

The gem is a semi translucent to opaque material consisting chiefly of calcium carbonate produced by marine invertebrates. Coral occurs in a variety of natural colors, including pink, white, orange, red and black. One of the most expensive varieties of the gem is angel-skin. Angel-skin is a whitish variety highlighted with a faint blush of pink or peach. The finest white varieties come from the Japanese waters. This variety is used extensively in fine coral jewelry.

The most expensive variety is blood coral. The blood variety is also known as noble or oxblood. This is a very deep red variety and should not be mistaken for the more common orange varieties. The finest quality of red gems comes from the seas around Italy. Thus, jewelry that contains high quality red gems is very expensive. The blood gems are highly sought by those who can afford them.

Red gems symbolize devotion, attachment and protection against plague and pestilence. The red gem is unique because it loses its red color if a friend of the wearer is about to die. For the gem to be effective in exercising its powers, it must not be altered by the human hand and should be worn in its natural state (uncut). This is the main reason that one sees the gem uncut in jewelry such as necklaces and pins.

Pink Corals-Caring chores for pink corals

Coral measures a meager 3.5 in Mohs scale and as a gem it's softer than others. So, you've got to be very conscious to handle this delicate stone made of Calcium Carbonate. Pink corals, as well, are pretty prone to scratches and thus only use soft moist cloth to clean it. But never dare to wash it by dipping it in to water. Corals are porous stones and thus get damaged if put in chemicals or in water for long period and lose its natural patina. Mind the following things while handling pink corals or jewelry made of them:

  • Store pink coral jewelry in pouches. This will save your precious gem from scratches.
  • When wearing pink or any other coral jewelry, it'd be better if you can avoid using strong sprays or cosmetics as these may damage the luster of coral.
  • If you lose a coral piece from your jewelry, it's wise that you fix that as soon as possible.
  • And whenever you need to restring your coral necklace, prefer a professional jeweler.

These tips won't just serve your pink coral jewelry, they will equally take care any of your coral jewelry. It's crucial that you be pretty caring about your coral jewelry and pieces as corals are becoming less available as their natural habitats are increasingly dying out. Pollution, rapid warming of the ocean water, vicious fishing method, harmful bacteria ...... these all have their roles to injure the coral reefs and due to the enormous global demand, the underwater stocks are declining pretty fast.

Coral Tips-How To Test The Real Coral

There are some facts and qualities about the real coral that you should keep in mind. The best coral should have a deep natural color. It is found in a standard (round or oval shape) and finished surface. The perfect coral does not have any dents or holes or perforations. It is smooth to touch.

You can do some tests to identify the real coral. Place the real coral in a glass of cow's milk. If the color of milk will change to the one with red tinge, the coral is real. The imitation coral cannot change the milk's whiteness. Another interesting test you can carry out is by actually wearing it. A true coral changes its color as per the physical health of the wearer. It will resume its original color when the physical health of the person is restored. But, it will fade out prior to the disorder in the wearer's physical health is evident.

Real Pearls or Fake Pearls

There are several methods to determine the differences between real pearls and imitations per the following:

First, when rubbing two pearls against each other, the pearl imitation feels slippery, while the real pearl feels rough and the layers of nacre will leave a powdery residue.

Second, when rubbing glass with pearls, the imitation pearl leaves no scratches, while the real pearl leaves scratches of pearl powder. After the powder is wiped off with cotton cloth or hand, one can feel that the genuine pearl is not damaged.

Third, although not slightly, if you run a pearl over the edge of your teeth. A real pearl will feel sandy and gritty, while a fake pearl will have a very smooth texture.

Fourth, if look at the pearls carefully, either out in the sunlight or under intense light. Fake pearls usually appear perfect without any flaws. And real pearls usually have flaws and imperfections such as minor color variations and shape differences.

Fifth, if you put pearls under a magnifying glass, the surface of real pearls look rough, while the surface of fake pearls would appear very smooth.

Six, although not true for Majorca pearls and high quality man-made seashell pearls most of the time, but especially for plastic imitations, you can tell the difference when you weigh the pearls in your hand. If it feels light, it is probably an imitation. Real pearls have a higher density and therefore they are a bit heavier.

Seven, if you really can`t tell if a pearl is real or not, and you do not mind losing an extra pearl, you can also cut it in half with a knife or smash it open with a hammer. The inside of real pearls consists of thin layers of nacre that looks like the layers of an onion.

Under normal circumstances, the above methods should be sufficient. However, if you still can`t decide if it is an imitation or a real pearl, you can get your pearl to be examined or x-rayed by a certified independent gemologist, which may be costly, however, it can provide a good piece of mind when it comes to determining the status of a pearl.

How to make a necklace of beads

Style is a matter of fashion that no one can compete. It depends upon individual tastes and preferences. If you want to take something unique by cutting own the heavy costs, you can make your jewelry at home. For this you will need different types of pearls and beads. The pearls band the beads can be selected depending on your choice. The pearls will add shimmer to your necklace; whereas the beads will bring about a little sparkle.

Take a wire of 9” in length and thread it with a needle on one of its side. Start stringing four beads of 3mm by alternating them with three delicacies. The necklace should begin and end with the 3mm bead. Don’t forget to string the pendant of your choice at the center. Start with the 3mm bead for creating a loop at the pendant.

The next step is to go through the beads again for tightening the wire by pulling the snug beads. Then it’s time to tie both the ends together using a surgeon’s knot and finally glue them. Again add few beads to the necklace in order to hide away the knot and the both the ends. After finishing this, trim away the excess thread.

Now determine the length of the finished necklace and then cut a small piece of the beading wire up to the length. Then string a pattern of alternating beads using four beads of 3mm and three delicacies. Now string the pendant on those beads. You can decorate the pendant in different ways. You can use a tear-droop shaped bead and a 3mm bead on either side of the pendant. Repeat this pattern unless you get the strand of the desired length.

Keshi Pearl Facts

Keshi pearls are the pearls that are loved by the Human beings and rejected by the oysters or mollusks. These pearls are formed in a very unique way as compared to the other methods of pearl formation. When the piece of a shell gets trapped in the mollusk, it ensues an infection. The oyster starts healing itself by forming nacre layers on the intruding substance to prevent further irritation. Till the oyster is alive, the layers of nacre keep on forming and the result is a beautiful and divine: A Keshi Pearl.

Although, Keshi pearls have been excluded from the category of natural pearls because they are not formed naturally and is a result of the pearl culturing process; but it gives the looks and shine much better than the natural pearls. Nowadays these pearls have become exceptional and infrequent. This is because the farmers have started x-raying the oysters to find out if the nucleus is present in it or not or whether it is expelled out. If an oyster is found expelling its nucleus then they are re-nucleated before the formation of a Keshi pearl. This process has made Keshi pearls even rarer than they actually were.

But even then, Keshi pearls have always remained popular because the solid nacre imparts a very high luster and excellent quality to the pearl.

Pink Diamond Engagement Rings

Thursday, November 6, 2008

Due to their rarity and rising popularity, pink diamonds are typically more expensive than regular diamonds. As with any jewelry, however, a low-quality pink diamond will be less expensive than a high-quality colorless gem, and each factor in a diamond’s price can be adjusted and balanced to find a stone the couple is happy with while not destroying their budget.

Alternatives to Pink Diamond Engagement Rings
For couples on a tight budget, there are several alternatives to pink diamonds that can provide the same beauty without the hefty price tag. Pink sapphires and rubies have similar colors and are significantly more affordable, though they do not sparkle as fiercely as diamonds. That characteristic can be modified with a fancier shape or additional accent stones, however, or the ring could be a combination of pink diamonds and similarly shaded gemstones. Couples may also want to consider using laboratory-created pink diamonds: heat treatments can be applied to colorless stones to create various shades, including stunning pinks. Synthetic stones can also be created with pleasing pink hues. Always be sure to ask a jeweler about any treatments or enhancements to verify the quality of the diamond.

pink diamonds at affordable prices

One of the Rarest and Most Valuable Colours of Diamond*
Natural fancy coloured diamonds are very rare and expensive. Pink is one of the rarest and most desirable colours. The Darya-i-Nur diamond is the largest pink diamond in the world at about 185 carats.
How Rare?
Australia has produced a relatively large number of fancy coloured diamonds including pink ones. Surprisingly, the increased availability of pink diamonds has increased the interest and demand for pink diamonds. Argyle now produces about 90% of the total world supply of pink diamonds.

How Expensive?
Quality for quality, fancy pink diamonds are more expensive than ordinary near-colourless ones. We have seen astronomical prices quoted for pink diamonds, but we manage to source small numbers at reasonable prices. Most pink diamonds, even enhanced ones, are more expensive than white ones of similar quality. Natural pinks are more valuable than enhanced, deep intense colours are generally more expensive than pale pinks. There are obviously many different varieties of pink, the "nicest" pinks are the most desirable and most expensive.

Jade-All About Jade

The Chinese call Jade "The Stone Of Heaven". They treasured Jade beyond any other stone. The Chinese centered their culture around Jade. Since Jade is a very hard stone (6.5) they found that it made a good tool like an ax head and other hammering and cutting tools since at that time, the tool choices were rocks, wood and crystals (no metals were known at this time).

The stone "Nephrite" is a stone found in China. It is a green stone that fooled the ancient Chinese and they treasured it as Jade. They did not know the difference between the two stones.

Nephrite is still sold as Jade. It is hard to know if a stone is Nephrite or Jade without tests. Nephrite is a softer stone (6.0). Nephrite is found in the NW area of China. The Chinese still cut and carve this stone today for the worlds market and many times it is mistaken for Jade. Besides the difference of the hardness between the two stones, there are also structured noticeably different from one another with Nephrite the fibrous structure of the stone is looser interwoven filtrons structure, whereas Jade (Jadeite) has a very tight interlocking granular structure.

True Jadeite is found in Burma, California, Guatemala, Russia, Japan, Hawaii, AND Switzerland. The Jadeite found in Burma is then cut and carved in many of the Asian countries like Burma, Thailand, and China and then sold. Jadeite from Burma was not introduced into the Chinese market before the late 1800’s. Replacement of nephrite by Burmese Jadeite came quickly as the preferred stone, due to the unique colors of the Burmese Jadeite (green, lavender, yellow and orange, and its greater translucent quality. Today Jadeite from Burma suggests fine quality Jadeite. This is why we travel to the oriental countries ourselves and hand select the Jadeite that we have made into our very own designed jewelry.

Because Jadeite is hard, durable and resistant to most chemicals, caring for this stone is safe and simple (soap and water will clean it nicely).
