Sandals – Web Resources

History

The History of Footwear - Sandals: The word for sandal is not Grecian but does relate to pre-Hellenic times. Scientists estimate people first wore animal skins during the Ice Age (5000,000 years ago). Rough shoes protected the feet of Stone Age people from rock and thorns.

History of Shoes: Sandals were the most common footwear in most early civilizations, however, a few early cultures had shoes. In Mesopotamia, (c. 1600–1200 BC) a type of soft shoes were worn by the mountain people who lived on the border of Iran. The soft shoe was made of wraparound leather, similiar to a moccasin. "As late as 1850 most shoes were made on absolutely straight lasts, there being no difference between the right and the left shoe."

Materials

Handmade Light weight Sandals: Lightweight orthopedic EVA provides cushion and quickly conforms to your foot. Used in orthotics and orthopedic footwear for cushion, support and hygene. We use this as to build cookies and heat formed orthotic sandals. Colors from left to right: Black, Dark Brown, Coffee, Red, Blue, Yellow, White.

Sandals and flip-flops with non-slip foot surface: Granules bonded to a sandal sole provide a high traction surface, even when wet. The granules are bonded to an upper surface of the sandal sole. The granules can be embedded in the sole or bonded to the sole with adhesive. The granules can be made of crushed rock or other hard materials. The granules can be present in selected weight-bearing areas of the sandal, such as the area supporting the foot ball, toes or heel. The granules may be present only in an area under the foot ball. The present sandal sole prevents the foot from slipping against the sandal sole, and thereby prevents damage to the sandal and prevents injury from falling.

Sandal Styles, Materials andTechniques: Anasazi sandal styles varied according to the construction technique used and the preference of the weaver. Toes might be rounded, squared, tapered, pointed, or even scalloped or heart-shaped. Heels could be rounded, squared, cupped, or puckered. The original shape may now be distorted, owing to wear and the impact of time and the environment.

Construction

Sport sandal construction : Novel sandal construction including a convertible heel harness to minimize foot slippage in its closed rearward position, and to become a part of a frontal ankle strap in its alternate, forward portion. Thus, the sandal may be slipped into and worn with an open back, or may be placed upon the foot with the harness engaging the heel.

Sandal construction with improved strap adjustment: An improved construction of sandal type footwear wherein adjustment of a continuous foot retention strap within the sole of the sandal is attained by incorporating a porous, disintegrable or partial adhesive barrier which allows assembly of the sandal without permanently fixing the strap into position, and an adhesive which allows readherence of the straps after they have been adjusted so as to prevent undesirable slippage of the straps through the sole assembly.

Sandal construction and method for manufacturing same: A sandal construction having ankle and heel straps that are secured to the sandal by a pair of posts. Each of the posts is affixed to the sole at two laterally spaced-apart locations to provide the posts with substantial lateral stability.

Sandal (footwear)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article deals with sandals as a type of footwear. For other uses see the disambiguation page at sandal.

Modern multi-colored Sandalette

Yoga sandals

In some parts of the United States, this type of sandal is referred to in slang as the "mandal" in that it is worn primarily by men.

Sandals are an open type of footwear, consisting of a sole held to the wearer's foot by straps or thongs. While the distinction between sandals and other types of footwear can sometimes be blurry (as in the case of the huaraches), the common understanding is that a sandal reveals most or all of the foot (especially the toes) to view. People may choose to wear sandals for several reasons, among them economy (sandals tend to require less material than shoes), comfort in warm weather, and (especially for women) for reasons of fashion and attractiveness.

Usually, sandals are worn in warmer climes or during warmer parts of the year, because feet stay cool and dry. The chances of getting a fungal infection on your feet (athlete's foot) is lower than with wearing an enclosed shoe, and wearing sandals may be part of treatment for a fungal foot infection.

There are many different kinds of sandals. A sandal may have a sole made from rope (espadrilles), rubber, leather, wood (clogs or geta) or tatami (as in zori). It may be held to the foot by a thong passing between the first and second toe, or by a strap that passes over the arch of the foot. It may or may not have a heel strap. It may have no heel, a high heel, or anything in between.

It is said that the New Zealand expression "jandals" for rubber sandals often used at the beach and called "thongs" comes from the expression "Japanese sandals." This is derived from the shape of jandals being similar to the Japanese zori, basically a rubber sole piece held on to the foot by two cloth thongs extending from the inner and outer side of the foot to the gap between the big toe and the second toe. This construction for footwear used to be the norm in Japan before westernization of clothing, with geta (wooden sole raised with one or two horizontal wooden pieces and attached to the foot with cloth thongs), and waraji (sole woven from straw with straw or cloth thongs, and sometimes extra ties over the foot and around the leg, often used for traveling).

"Saltwater sandals" are/were a popular children's footwear, originally developed (by the Hoy Shoe Company of St. Louis, MO) in the 1940s as a way of coping with wartime leather shortages, as they were designed to be made largely from the scrap leather left over from making men's shoes. They are still made by the original manufacturer.

There is a new type of sandals that are gaining popularity that are known as Yoga sandals. They are sandals that have a thong between all the toes, not just the big toe and second toe. They were originally designed to help spread the toes for better balance during the practice of Yoga. It has been claimed that they can have major health benefits on the feet and body. It is claimed that they can help arthritis in the feet, bunions, hammer toes, and other foot ailments, and that they can also help with lower back pain by providing better skeletal alignment. History

Sandals are a very ancient type of footwear. They were worn in many early civilized societies, including Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The typical Greek or Roman sandal had straps tied far up the shin. Some kinds, worn by soldiers, had a metal part in front to protect the leg, the sole often being studded and the inner part fur-lined.
